Jesus Undoes Spiritual Indifference
Scripture References
- Revelation 3:15-16
- Revelation 3:19
Overview
Jesus’ own words to the lukewarm church in Laodicea expose how spiritual indifference turns His stomach. In this first “What Would Jesus Undo” session, we face that same condition, identify what fuels it, spot its everyday symptoms, and choose concrete acts of faith that reignite passion for Him. Life together, honest questions, and prayer are the tools Jesus uses to conform us to His image.
Main Points
1. Jesus Confronts Lukewarm Faith
- Read aloud: Revelation 3:15-16—Jesus knows our deeds; neither hot nor cold faith makes Him “spit” us out.
- Lukewarm = spiritually stale and depressingly detached; it doesn’t just break His heart, it turns His stomach.
- Story: Speaker recalls seasons 11–13 of pastoring when burnout and self-preservation left him emptier than ever—classic spiritual indifference.
2. Two Root Causes of Indifference
- Self-sufficiency
- “You say, ‘I’m rich… I don’t need a thing,’ but you’re wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.”
- We think we have what matters while lacking what matters most.
- Distractions of this world
- From the parable of the sower (Mark’s Gospel): worries, wealth, and desires choke the Word and make it unfruitful.
- Activities, busyness, endless need for “more” divert the heart.
3. Six Everyday Signs of Lukewarm Living
- Caring more about impressing people than pleasing God.
- Being obsessed with life on earth rather than eternity in heaven.
- Rationalizing sin and living without a healthy fear of God.
- Believing in Jesus yet rarely sharing your faith.
- Turning to God only when you need something.
- Blending in—living almost no differently from the world around you.
“We cannot defeat what we cannot define.”
4. Turning From Indifference Toward Faith
- Revelation 3:19—Jesus disciplines those He loves: “Be diligent and turn from your indifference.”
- Practical antidote: do at least one thing every day that requires faith.
- Stand for what’s right even if mocked.
- Give generously beyond comfort.
- Apologize or forgive when it costs.
- Share Jesus with someone who doesn’t know Him.
- Pray boldly for a miracle.
- Story: The pastor’s family is praying daily for miraculous healing for two daughters, refusing passivity and choosing faith-filled action.
Key Truths
- Lukewarm faith is intolerable to Jesus; it literally makes Him sick.
- Self-sufficiency and worldly distractions are primary pipelines feeding indifference.
- Honest self-diagnosis is the first step; what remains undefined remains undefeated.
- Real faith always shows up in concrete, risk-taking action.
- Jesus’ correction flows from love; conviction is an invitation, not condemnation.
Response
- Admit where self-sufficiency or distraction rules your heart.
- Identify which of the six lukewarm symptoms best describes you today.
- Choose one faith-requiring action for tomorrow and commit to it.
- Share your choice with your group for accountability.
- Pray together, asking the Holy Spirit to replace indifference with holy passion.
Closing
Jesus would undo spiritual indifference because it robs us of authentic life with Him. He calls us to diligent repentance and faith that acts.
“Turn from your indifference.”
Let’s move from lukewarm to burning hot—starting with one step of faith tomorrow.
