You Are the One Jesus Loves

Scripture References

  • Romans 5:8
  • 1 John 4
  • Luke 9:54

Overview

God’s love is completely unlike the love we usually experience. Ordinary love values what is already impressive; God’s love creates value in what it chooses. Through a ragged childhood teddy bear, a hot-headed disciple named John, and the story of Jesus’ birth and cross, the message calls each listener to receive this unconditional love and declare: “I am the one Jesus loves.”

Main Points

Two kinds of love

  • Love #1: loves because the object is already valuable (countertops, outfits, collectibles).
  • Love #2: loves and therefore gives value to the object.
  • Our struggle: many never feel they measure up, so we assume God’s love works like the first kind.

God’s love illustrated by a ragdoll bear

  • Story: Craig’s childhood bear “Bobby” is worn, patched, marker-stained, and nearly valueless to anyone else—yet priceless to him because it is his.
  • Parallel: we are flawed “ragdolls,” yet fully loved by God.

“You ain’t nothing but a ragdoll… but you’re God’s ragdoll.”

John’s identity shift: from Son of Thunder to “the one Jesus loved”

  • John and James, rough fishermen nicknamed “Sons of Thunder,” once wanted to call down fire on an unfriendly village (Luke 9:54).
  • After time with Jesus, John refers to himself three times as “the disciple Jesus loved.”
  • Love received reshaped his identity; the same can reshape ours.

Responding to the love that gives us worth

  • Romans 5:8—Christ died for us “while we were still sinners.”
  • 1 John 4—God is love; He proved it by sending His Son.
  • Salvation invitation: repent, trust Jesus, become brand-new.
  • Congregation led to close eyes and confess, “I am the one that Jesus loves.”
  • Call to pray for loved ones who have not yet experienced this love.

Key Truths

  • God does not love you because you are worthy; His love makes you worthy.
  • Love is not merely what God does; love is who God is.
  • Nothing—past, present, powers, height, or depth—can separate believers from God’s love in Christ.
  • Your identity is not defined by failures or labels but by being “the one Jesus loves.”
  • God’s love was shown, not shouted, through Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection.

Response

  • Receive God’s unconditional love instead of trying to earn it.
  • Speak over yourself daily: “I am the one Jesus loves.”
  • Pray by name for friends and family who have not yet trusted Christ.
  • Show God’s love this week through invitations, kindness, and bold witness.
  • Let go of shame and regret, believing Christ has made you new.

Closing

God’s love seeks the one who wandered, heals the ragdoll heart, and rewrites every identity. Whether you feel unworthy or overlooked, the cross declares your value. Open your hands, release the past, and step into the life His love makes possible.

“You are the one that Jesus loves.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your love.
I receive it.
Jesus, forgive my sins.
Save me, make me brand new.
Fill me with Your Spirit so I could know Your love and show Your love.
Thank You for new life; I give You all of mine.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
