Spirit-Led Decisions and Uncommon Confidence
Scripture References
Overview
God often leads us through the same four stages Paul experienced in Acts 20: the Spirit’s prompting, certain uncertainty, predictable resistance, and uncommon confidence. Craig challenges every LifeGroup member to recognize their own “Deo Numa” moments—times when we sense the Holy Spirit nudging us—to step out in faith even when the outcome is unclear and opposition is likely. Whatever our job, season, or setting, our constant call is to glorify Jesus and testify to His grace.
Main Points
1. The Spirit’s Prompting — Deo Numa
- “Deo Numa” means “bound/compelled by the Spirit.”
- Craig felt a fresh prompting that very morning to contact someone and immediately obeyed.
- Group exercise: Share a recent time you sensed God nudging you. Telling the story strengthens your faith and the faith of the group.
2. Certain Uncertainty
- Paul: “I’m going to Jerusalem… I don’t know what’s going to happen to me there.”
- Following God often includes incomplete details; faith fills the gap.
- If you never feel uncertain, you may not be living by faith.
3. Predictable Resistance
- Paul was warned that “prison and hardships are facing me” in every city.
- Expect pushback—criticism, spiritual opposition, or practical obstacles—when you obey God.
- Resistance is not proof you missed God’s will; it may confirm you’re on the right track.
4. Uncommon Confidence
- Paul’s settled resolve:
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”
- Loving your job is a blessing, but your calling to glorify Jesus transcends any position.
- Week-one reminder: “Whatever you do… do it all for the glory of God.”
5. Faith Decisions on the Table
- Every believer has at least one looming choice that will require significant faith—changing jobs, starting school, buying a home, launching a ministry, etc.
- Craig and Amy are presently wrestling with such a decision and must act soon.
- Group question: “What decision do you need to make right now that will require significant faith?”
6. Glorifying God in Daily Tasks
- Whether working, studying, parenting, or serving, the core assignment remains: testify to the gospel of grace.
- Group discussion: “How can you glorify God with uncommon confidence in the ordinary tasks of your day?”
Key Truths
- God determines our steps even as we make plans.
- A Spirit-prompted life embraces uncertainty instead of demanding full clarity.
- Resistance often accompanies obedience and can signal you are exactly where God wants you.
- True confidence comes not from circumstances but from commitment to finish the task Jesus has given.
- Your ultimate calling—to honor Christ—applies in every career, season, and setting.
Response
- Tune your heart to recognize Deo Numa moments this week.
- Obey the Holy Spirit promptly, even if details are missing.
- Evaluate current decisions: identify the one that most requires faith and pray over it with your group.
- Reframe opposition as potential confirmation of God’s direction.
- Intentionally glorify God in each routine responsibility today—study, meetings, diapers, or deadlines.
Closing
Paul’s journey shows that Spirit-led decisions rarely come with full explanations, yet they always carry enough grace to finish the race. Expect uncertainty and resistance, but move forward with uncommon confidence, knowing your highest task is to testify to the gospel of God’s grace—wherever you are and whatever you do.
