Move On: Responding at the Hinge Moment

Scripture References

  • Exodus 14:15

Overview

Facing the Red Sea, Israel saw only “the end,” Moses counseled “stand still,” but God commanded “move on.” Pastor Steven contrasts those three responses to show that breakthrough usually requires a forward step, not an escape. Small, obedient actions—“little hinges”—swing the “big doors” of God’s deliverance. When a so-called “word from God” pulls you away from responsibility and only promises relief, beware; true guidance propels you toward purposeful movement, even while doubts and obstacles remain.

Main Points

1. Three Immediate Reactions to an Impossible Obstacle

  • God’s people: desperation that sounds like, “It’s over,” which masks deep fear and erupts as anger and blame toward Moses.
They even rewrite history to justify quitting (“We were better off in Egypt”).
  • Moses: calming leadership—“Stand still, God will fight for you”—yet this still misses God’s instruction for the moment.
  • God: “Move on.” Obedience, not paralysis, is the hinge that opens the way through the sea.

“Beware of any word from God that pulls you toward an escape from reality rather than an embrace of responsibility.”

2. Big Doors Swing on Little Hinges

  • God uses something as small as Moses’ staff to part something as large as a sea.
Illustration: “Big seas open with little sticks; big problems start with little curiosities; great joy erupts from small praise.”
  • Everyday “hinge moments” decide forward motion or backward drift—choices to forgive or cling to offense, to step up or shrink back.

3. Discernment: Freedom vs. Relief

  • We often baptize our own wishes as “God’s word” when it simply offers relief from pressure.
  • Genuine direction will call you to step into responsibility (e.g., staying, working through offense, raising the child, taking treatment) rather than abandon it. Story: Staff member Lindsay felt overwhelmed but, after last week’s message, chose to step up instead of back out.

4. You Might Not Make It—Unless You Move

  • Pastor flips his usual encouragement: remaining still in disobedience could mean dying on the shoreline.
  • Feeding constant negativity, rehearsing “the end,” or living in nostalgia will sabotage progress.
  • Exodus 14:15 is the hinge: God speaks while feet are still in the crisis—movement must start before the miracle appears.

“The Lord said, ‘I know it looks bad… but what I put in your hand, when My word comes, you can change the end.’”

5. Practical Forward Steps

  • Take what’s already in your hand (ability, resource, opportunity) and stretch it over the “sea” in front of you.
  • Replace complaint playlists with praise; choose a single act of faith today.
  • Small obedience today sets the course for the next season.

“Move.” (repeated charge while congregation physically took a step)

Key Truths

  • Fear often dresses up as anger; trace the anger to its underlying fear.
  • Revising the past or fantasizing about a pain-free future keeps you paralyzed in the present.
  • A true word from God propels you toward purpose; escapist “words” are usually wish fulfillment.
  • Obedience in tiny, ordinary choices opens extraordinary outcomes.
  • Your response in real time—not the size of the obstacle—determines whether you cross or crumble.

Response

  • Identify the “hinge moment” you’re facing and decide to move forward.
  • Use what God has already placed in your hand instead of waiting for something bigger.
  • Replace escapist thinking with a concrete step of responsible faith today.
  • When anger rises, ask, “What am I afraid of?” and address the fear with action.
  • Guard your inputs—shift playlists, conversations, and media toward hope and truth.

Closing

Standing at what looks like the end doesn’t guarantee defeat, but lingering in passivity might. The sea only opened after Israel stepped forward, staff extended. Today’s small decision can rewrite tomorrow’s story—yet that hinges on movement, not mere intention.

“You might not make it… if you don’t move.”
