Killing Your Inner Coward

Scripture References

  • Judges 6:11-12
  • Judges 7:2
  • Ephesians 6

Overview

God calls every believer—man or woman—a “mighty warrior,” yet most of us feel anything but courageous. Using Gideon’s story, Pastor Craig exposed the gap between how we look on the outside and the insecurity that screams inside. Warriors must silence that inner coward, trust the strength God already supplies, and choose to stand their ground even when their numbers—and their confidence—shrink.

Main Points

Fight the Inner Fear of Failure

  • Gideon was both courageous (only family member who worshiped God) and terrified (hiding in a winepress).
  • The angel’s greeting, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior,” clashed with Gideon’s self-doubt.
  • Our first reflex is often Gideon’s: “But Lord… I’m the weakest, the least.”
  • Common modern fears: sharing faith, starting a ministry, tithing, leaving a party lifestyle, not providing enough.
  • Illustration: Craig’s Saturday-night meltdown before preaching; on stage he looked bold, inside he felt inadequate.
  • Encouragement dynamics: women long to feel cherished today; men long to feel respected today. Words of belief from wives, sisters, friends fuel a man’s courage.
  • Question posed: “What are you afraid of failing?” Naming it is the first step to fighting it.

In Christ You Already Have What You Need

  • God told Gideon, “Go in the strength you have… Am I not sending you?”
  • New-covenant reality: we have “everything we need for life and godliness.”
  • Spiritual armor listed—helmet of salvation, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, etc.—reminds us whose power we fight with.
  • Hesitation happens when eyes shift from Christ’s sufficiency to our insufficiency.
  • Story: Craig’s single-adult ministry once shrank from hundreds to four. God used the step backward to strip self-confidence so future growth would rest on God’s power, not Craig’s talent.
  • Principle: “With God, the way forward often starts with a step backward.”

Stand Your Ground—Victory Comes Through Faithful Obedience

  • God reduced Gideon’s army from 32 000 to 300 so no one could boast.
  • Battle plan: trumpets and clay jars. Victory began “while each man held his position.”
  • Greatest victories often stand next to greatest fears; feel fear and fight anyway.
  • Story: Two-year-old Sam broke his leg on a scooter. Years later he faced the driveway, tears flowing: “Dad, there are some rides a man’s just got to take.” Conquering the scooter mirrored conquering fear.
  • Ephesians 6 command: after putting on the armor, “stand your ground… and after you have done everything, stand.”
  • Craig’s weekly ritual: one physical step onto the platform—a symbolic move from insecurity into God’s authority.

Key Truths

  • God sees more in you than you see in yourself.
  • Every warrior’s loudest enemy is the fear of failure; his deepest pain is future regret.
  • In Christ, you already possess every resource needed to win your assigned battles.
  • Steps backward can be God’s setup for unmistakable, God-glorifying victories.
  • Courage is often nothing more than choosing to stand when retreat seems safer.

Response

  • Identify and name the fear that keeps you hiding.
  • Declare, “The Lord is with me, mighty warrior,” whenever insecurity rises.
  • Encourage the men and women around you today—respect, admiration, and belief fuel courage.
  • Step into the assignment God has placed before you instead of waiting for perfect conditions.
  • Keep standing—return to prayer, Scripture, and obedience even after setbacks.

Closing

The call is clear: do not abandon your post. Someone depends on your protection, a kingdom advances through your obedience, and a battle waits for your engagement. Feel the fear, but take the ride.

“The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”

Prayer

Pastor Craig prayed for increased faith, asking God to silence insecurities and awaken the heart of a warrior in every listener. He then led those ready to follow Christ in surrender: confessing sin, receiving Jesus’ forgiveness, and inviting the Holy Spirit to empower a lifetime of courageous obedience.
