There Is Always a Way Out

Scripture References

  • 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
  • Hebrews 4:15

Overview

God does not leave His children trapped. Every temptation we face comes with a God-given exit, and Christ’s strength inside us is greater than the wrong desires within us. In this opening message of “A Way Out,” we learned what temptation really is, why no one is exempt, and how Jesus provides the escape route every single time.

Context

The series launches after a weekend celebrating 1,700 baptisms—visible proof that “every single person matters to God.” Pastor Craig speaks from a “divine burden” to see long-standing bondages broken over the next four weeks.

Main Points

A Personal Wake-Up Call

  • Story: In college, Craig believed family alcoholism would skip him. After beer-bonging a six-pack, finishing a bottle of Seagram’s 7, and blacking out beside a busy street, he realized, “I had a problem.”
  • The incident showed him—and shows us—that everyone carries something persistent that shouldn’t be there.

What Is Temptation?

  • Working definition: anything that promises satisfaction at the cost of obedience to God.
  • Dopamine rewards the momentary “yes,” quickly followed by guilt, regret, and shame—the destructive cycle many know too well.

“Our God is faithful; He will always give you a way out.”

Truth 1 – It’s Not a Sin to Be Tempted

  • Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
  • False guilt is a tactic of the enemy; feeling pulled toward the donut, the movie, or the lie is not failure.
  • Narrow victories count—celebrate them instead of shaming yourself.

Truth 2 – You Are Never Above Temptation

  • “If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you do not fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).
  • Satan attacks both weaknesses and perceived strengths (the devoted family man who has an affair, the health-minded doctor hooked on pills).
  • Overconfidence leads to the hardest, fastest falls.

Truth 3 – God Never Tempts You

  • God tests to promote; Satan tempts to destroy.
  • James teaches that temptation is birthed from “our own desires,” which, when grown, give birth to death.
  • Every temptation is an invitation to depend on Christ—prayer (talking to God), meditation (hearing God), and temptation (learning to rely on God) draw us closer.

Truth 4 – God Always Provides a Way Out

  • Whenever we are tempted, “He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
  • Possible exits God may highlight:
    • Confession—first to God for forgiveness, then to trusted people for healing.
    • Admitting the problem after multiple warnings from others.
    • Counseling, rehab, or deep accountability that “kicks your butt.”
    • Genuine repentance, not mere remorse.
  • Illustration: Old video game “Asteroids” had a lifesaving “hyperspace” button. In the kingdom, the button is “hyper-grace.” Hit it and get out.

Key Truths

  • Temptation is about false promises of satisfaction that break true obedience.
  • Feeling tempted is inevitable; acting on it is optional.
  • Confidence in our own strength increases vulnerability.
  • God tests to advance us; the enemy tempts to destroy us.
  • Christ in you is stronger than the desires in you, and His grace always offers an exit.

Response

  • Identify the specific temptation that keeps circling you.
  • Celebrate narrow victories instead of spiraling into false guilt.
  • Invite trusted friends or mentors to hold you accountable.
  • Confess secrets before they grow; shine light on hidden struggles.
  • When the lure appears, “hit the button”—run to prayer, Scripture, or a friend immediately.
  • Depend on Christ’s strength daily, acknowledging your continual need.

Closing

Temptation is universal, but so is God’s faithfulness. Whether the struggle feels gigantic and shameful or small and irritating, Jesus stands ready to free you. The moment you’re lured, remember the promise: He has already prepared a door marked “Way Out.” Walk through it in His strength, again and again, until the chains fall for good.

Prayer

Pastor Craig prayed that the Holy Spirit would break chains immediately for some and begin or continue a process of freedom for others, asking that Christ’s power inside believers be stronger than any wrong desire.
