Escaping the Porn Trap
Scripture References
- 1 Corinthians 10:3
- Job 31:1
- Romans 12:2
Overview
Pastor Craig continued the Think Ahead series by confronting pornography and sexual lust head-on. Drawing from Job 31, he showed that temptation is universal, yet God is always faithful to provide a way of escape. By thinking ahead, making firm covenants, and pursuing an intimacy with Jesus that outshines counterfeit pleasures, believers can walk in lasting freedom and protect everything they value.
Main Points
1. Temptation is Certain, but a Way Out is Promised
- Scripture promises that no temptation is unique; God “will also provide a way out.”
- Pornography is now instant and anonymous—“you give your 12-year-old a phone, you’re giving them porn in their pocket.”
- Personal story: first exposures in 5th, 7th, and 10th grade show the lasting imprint of images and the mix of excitement and shame.
2. Job’s Covenant: Decide Before the Heat of the Moment
“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.” (Job 31:1)
- Job led with lust in his self-defense, implying vulnerability.
- He understood that God sees every step; hidden lust is still exposed to Him.
- Left unchecked, sexual sin can “wipe out everything I own.”
- Think-ahead exercise: What could unchecked sexual sin cost you—trust, marriage, ministry, legacy?
3. The Devil’s Temptation Cycle
- Trigger – an image, mood, or moment of loneliness.
- Desire – dopamine rush; body responds.
- Rationalize – “I deserve this,” “No one’s getting hurt.”
- Act Out – click, view, message, masturbate.
- Shame – enemy minimizes beforehand, maximizes afterward.
- Secrecy – delete history, hide behavior.
- Result: sin grows best in the dark, creating a “ball and chain” of fear and guilt.
4. Predetermine Your Escape Plan
a. Flee, Don’t Just Fight
- “Run, Forrest, run”—close doors before you’re in the room.
- Every sin usually happens through a door we left open.
- Practical example: Pastor Craig’s devices are “locked down”; staff and Amy see all texts and emails—nothing to lose by extra protection.
“I’d rather have a dumb phone than end up divorced.”
b. Ask God to Renew Mind & Heal Heart
- Most people carry a “sexual wound” from early exposure or abuse.
- Pray for mental rewiring and heart healing; sex is God’s gift within marriage, lust is the counterfeit.
- Four-phase healing timeline described (dopamine crash to three-month restoration).
c. Pursue a Life Filled with Jesus
- Freedom isn’t just subtracting lust; it’s adding purpose, risk, and thrill in following Christ.
- When you’re full of prayer, serving, giving, witnessing, you have little room—or time—for lesser thrills.
5. Count the Cost & Choose Freedom
- Five minutes of sexual sin can wreck decades of integrity.
- Pastor listed what he would lose: congregation’s trust, pastoral role, children’s respect, Amy’s heart.
- The truth sets us free; God replaces what the enemy has stolen.
6. Invitation & Prayer
- Every listener challenged to covenant with their eyes, close every open door, and embrace Jesus’ grace.
- Salvation call: turn from sin, trust Christ, receive the Spirit’s power to live pure.
