Overview

Jesus promises that He is the Good Shepherd and His sheep can recognize His voice. Hearing that voice isn’t mystical or reserved for a few; it involves three simple, risky steps: ask Him to speak, listen for His reply—primarily through His Word—and do whatever He says, even when it stretches faith. When we slow down, turn down the world’s noise, and obey what we’ve already been shown, God’s gentle whisper becomes clear in the ordinary moments of life.

Main Points

Ask God to speak

  • Hearing begins with an invitation: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
  • This is a dangerous prayer; God may say something you don’t want to hear.
    • Story: Young Samuel served in ritual but not relationship until God called his name in the night. Eli instructed him to respond, “Speak Lord…”. The message he received was hard—judgment on Eli’s family.
  • Don’t expect guidance if you aren’t willing to accept any answer.
  • “Just because you aren’t hearing doesn’t mean God isn’t speaking.”

Listen to what He says

  • God promises, “Call to me and I will answer you” (Jeremiah 33:3).
  • The most reliable channel is Scripture; God never contradicts His Word.
  • Other ways He speaks:
    • Wise friends, sermons, songs, circumstances (open/closed doors).
    • Inner promptings of the Holy Spirit after salvation.
    • Dreams, visions, supernatural peace—or restless lack of peace.
  • Illustration: Pilot training—air-traffic control calls the tail number. The more the instructor listened, the quicker he recognized his name amid radio chatter. Likewise, consistent listening sharpens recognition of God’s call.
  • Illustration: TV earpiece—while talking on screen, a quiet producer’s voice directed and comforted. God often guides like that “second conversation.”
  • Verse picture: Whether turning right or left, you’ll hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).
  • Practical exercise: sit silently and identify twenty distinct sounds; the discipline trains you to notice what is always there—so with God’s voice.

Do what He tells you

  • Blessing is tied to obedience, not mere hearing.
  • If you haven’t heard God lately, revisit the last instruction—many are “educated beyond their level of obedience.”
  • Obedience usually requires faith and may feel uncomfortable.
  • Warning: Unforgiven grudges, unconfessed sin, or ignored promptings (give, serve, invite, forgive) can dull spiritual hearing.

Why God often whispers

  • Elijah looked for God in wind, earthquake, and fire, but the Lord came in “a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12).
  • A whisper draws you closer; God is relational.
  • “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) counters the shout of culture—scrolling, clicking, rushing.

Key Truths

  • Jesus, the Good Shepherd, guarantees His sheep can know His voice.
  • Asking God to speak without willingness to obey leads to frustration.
  • Scripture is the non-negotiable filter for every perceived prompting.
  • Spiritual hearing improves with practiced, focused listening.
  • Delayed or partial obedience muffles further guidance.

Response

  • Pray daily, “Speak Lord; your servant is listening.”
  • Schedule quiet, phone-free space to read Scripture and wait in silence.
  • Act immediately on the next clear prompting, however small.
  • Review past instructions and complete unfinished obedience.
  • Turn down competing noises—media, hurry, competing opinions—to tune in to God’s whisper.

Closing

God is always speaking, eager to guide, comfort, correct, and encourage. When we ask, listen, and obey, even ordinary moments—doing dishes, driving to work, lying awake at night—can become encounters with the Good Shepherd. Turn down the world’s volume, lean in, and hear His gentle whisper.

“Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”

Prayer

Father, cultivate in us a humble, expectant heart. Teach us to open Your Word, quiet our surroundings, and recognize Your whisper. Give us courage to do whatever You show us, trusting that Your ways are higher and always good. Amen.
