Stop Comparing Your Calling

Primary text

  • John 21:20

Overview

You are God’s masterpiece, perfectly equipped to do the specific good works He prepared for you. Yet comparison—especially through social media—can rob you of joy and derail your divine assignment. Using the rivalry of Peter and John and the writer of Hebrews’ image of running our own race, the message urges: stay in your lane, fix your eyes on Jesus, and serve God’s purpose right where you are.

Main Points

1. Comparison is a curse

  • Social media often turns gratitude into envy; a “better day” post can make your day feel worse.
  • Repeated axiom:

“The fastest way to kill something special is to compare it to something else.”

  • Comparison isn’t limited to possessions or vacations; we also envy abilities—e.g., Pastor Craig’s frustration that he can’t sing or build furniture while others can.

2. You are perfectly designed for God’s purpose

  • Ephesians 2:10 calls every believer God’s “masterpiece” (Greek: poema, a poetic work).
  • “God don’t create no junk”—your birth itself proves your purpose is necessary; there is no substitute for you.
  • Gifts, personality, and even limitations point to the lane you’re meant to run in.

3. Comparison is the enemy of calling

  • We often work for “them”—an undefined audience whose approval constantly shifts.
  • You cannot fulfill God’s purpose for you while measuring yourself against someone else’s progress, influence, or applause.

4. Peter & John: a biblical picture of rivalry

  • Story: In John 20, the risen Christ’s empty tomb becomes a footrace. Three times John notes he outran Peter, showing their competitive streak.
  • Story: After Jesus reinstates Peter (John 21:20), Peter immediately asks about John’s destiny. Jesus replies, in effect, “That’s none of your business; you follow Me.”
  • Lesson: Jesus calls each disciple to unique obedience, not mutual comparison.

5. Run your race with perseverance

  • Hebrews 12:1-2 urges believers to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” by fixing eyes on Jesus, not on runners in other lanes.
  • Illustration: Looking over your shoulder in a race breaks stride; so does scrolling someone else’s highlight reel.
  • Personal application: Pastor Craig’s freedom came when he stopped ranking his ministry against others and started cheering on peers while staying faithful to his own lane.

6. Living out your calling today

  • A pandemic or any limitation does not suspend God’s call.
  • Examples of current “lanes”: online college classes, small-business leadership with integrity, diaper-changing, student ministry via text, faith-focused social media.
  • Success is not a future goal; it is faithfulness to Jesus right now.

Key Truths

  • You have everything you need to do everything God created you to do.
  • Comparison steals joy and suffocates purpose.
  • Your race is winnable only by you; no one else can run it.
  • Fixing your eyes on Jesus keeps you centered in calling and free from envy.
  • Success is measured by daily faithfulness, not outward metrics or public applause.

Response

  • Acknowledge where comparison is poisoning your gratitude; confess it.
  • List the specific gifts, roles, and opportunities God has entrusted to you and thank Him.
  • Unfollow, mute, or limit media inputs that trigger envy.
  • Identify one concrete way to serve God’s people this week—right where you are.
  • Speak aloud (or write) the refrain when tempted to compare: “I’m running my race; eyes on Jesus.”

Closing

The church remains God’s church whether buildings are open or closed. In every season, He stirs gifts within His people to meet real needs. Keep your eyes on Jesus, stay in your lane, and serve His purpose today—because

“The fastest way to kill something special is to compare it to something else.”

Prayer

Father, thank You that we are Your masterpieces, created in Christ Jesus for good works You ordained long ago. Forgive us for measuring ourselves against others. Empower us by Your Spirit to fix our eyes on Jesus, to run with perseverance the race marked out for us, and to serve Your purpose in our generation—today and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
