Overview
Pastor Craig opened a three-week series on spiritual warfare by exposing Satan as “the deceiver who attacks your mind with lies.” Drawing from Genesis 3 and Jesus’ temptations, he showed that the enemy’s first tactic is always to undermine and distort God’s Word. Because every believer is already under attack, we must recognize the battle and answer every lie with the truth of Scripture—our one offensive weapon, the sword of the Spirit.
Context
Life.Church begins its annual January fast and celebrates the global Bible-translation work supported through the YouVersion Bible App and the Museum of the Bible dedication in Washington, DC.
Main Points
Satan is real and relentless
- Greatest deception: convincing people he doesn’t exist.
- Scripture paints a daily conflict between God’s kingdom of light and Satan’s kingdom of darkness.
- Because we bear God’s image, the devil continually targets us.
How the deceiver works (Genesis 3)
- Questions God’s Word: “Did God really say…?” – introduces doubt about God’s goodness.
- Twists God’s Word: partial truths (“You will be like God”) hide deadly lies.
- Once we question God’s goodness, it becomes easier to disobey His will.
You are under attack
- Illustration: If an intruder threatened his family, Pastor Craig said he would become a mix of Rambo, Jackie Chan, Jason Bourne, and Popeye—showing the urgency with which believers must respond to spiritual threats.
- Spiritual opposition often intensifies when we step out in faith, generosity, or service.
- Passive hope is not a strategy; active resistance is required.
Fight with the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6; Hebrews 4:12)
- Armor of God supplies defense; Scripture is the single offensive weapon.
- The Word is “alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb 4:12).
- Illustration: The short Roman gladius—highlighted with a playful “Gladiator” movie reenactment—pictures close-quarters combat against lies.
- Jesus modeled this in the wilderness: three temptations, three responses beginning “It is written…” (Matt 4 narrative cited without chapter).
Embedding the Word
- “I have hidden Your word in my heart” (Psalm 119) means daily intake, not occasional reference.
- First of the day belongs to God: open the Bible/App before news or social media.
- Life.Church’s role: $1 million committed to help translate Scripture into the remaining 1,700 languages by 2033 through the YouVersion platform.
- Story: Pastor Craig described dedicating the Illuminations exhibit at the Museum of the Bible, celebrating collective efforts to complete global Bible translation.
Declarations of truth
“Not today, devil— not my house, not my family, not this time, not this Jesus-follower.”
- Examples of wielding specific verses against common lies (fear, shame, accusation, sickness, marital conflict, weariness).
- We fight from victory, not for victory, because “greater is the One who dwells within me than he who is in the world.”
Key Truths
- Satan’s primary weapon is deception; God’s primary defense for us is truth.
- Doubting God’s goodness is the gateway to disobeying His will.
- Every believer is already on a battlefield; neutrality is an illusion.
- Scripture internalized becomes Scripture vocalized—the decisive blow against every lie.
- We don’t fight alone; the same power that raised Christ now lives in us.
Response
- Recognize the enemy’s presence and refuse passive tolerance.
- Immerse yourself daily in God’s Word—read, listen, memorize, meditate.
- Wield specific Scriptures aloud whenever lies surface.
- Stand with your church family in prayer, fasting, and worship.
- Invest time and resources so every nation receives the Bible.
Closing
Pastor Craig urged the church to move from hearing to living the Word, because “every square inch and every split-second is claimed by God and counter-claimed by Satan.” The truth of Scripture must be our first and constant line of defense, ensuring that deception never gets the final word.
“I’m not fighting for victory, devil; I’m fighting from victory, because Jesus has already won.”
Prayer
The congregation prayed a salvation prayer, confessing sin, receiving Jesus as Lord, and asking to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to follow Him and live by His Word.
