When You Feel Unappreciated

Scripture References

  • Luke 17
  • Luke 4
  • Matthew 6

Overview

Jesus understands what it is to pour yourself out and receive little thanks in return. From the healing of ten lepers—only one returned—to His own ministry swings from public praise to attempted murder, He shows us how to stay steady when others overlook us. In this message we learn three truths that anchor our identity, explain why the people we serve can miss the gift, and remind us that heaven notices every hidden act.

Main Points

Opening Story: The Forgotten Gift

  • Story: Craig bought an expensive pen—well beyond his normal budget—as a cultural gesture for a hero he was meeting.
  • He presented it, they chatted briefly, the man walked away and left the gift on the table for two days.
  • The sting of being unacknowledged set the stage for today’s theme: living and serving when your effort feels unseen.

1. “How they make you feel is not who you are.”

  • We often tie our worth to others’ reactions—praise inflates, silence deflates.
  • Luke 4 illustrates the craziness of public opinion:
    • Verse 15—everyone praises Jesus.
    • Verses 28–29—same crowd tries to throw Him off a cliff.
  • Someone’s inability to see your worth does not decrease your value.
  • Our identity is secured by God: chosen, forgiven, sealed by the Spirit, light of the world, overcomer.

2. Those you serve the most often appreciate you the least

  • Bible example: Joseph interprets the cupbearer’s dream; once released, the cupbearer “never gave him another thought.”
  • Familiarity breeds expectation: what’s normal isn’t celebrated—it’s expected.
    • Illustration: Sending Amy flowers every Friday lost its surprise; random deliveries regain gratitude (and “points”).
  • If you show up on time or cook great meals every day, compliments fade not because you’re failing but because you’re consistent.
  • Take heart: people may recognize your sacrifice later, even if they miss it now.

3. What’s unseen by people is often most significant to God

“The Father sees.”

  • Culture applauds visible milestones—promotions, houses, graduations—yet heaven values hidden faithfulness.
  • Matthew 6: serve, give, pray “in secret”; the Father who sees in secret rewards openly.
  • God (El Roi, “the God who sees”) notices:
    • Early-morning set-up teams, unseen integrity, repeated clean-ups.
    • Parents working extra jobs, volunteers in the two-year-old class, intercessors on their faces.
  • Hebrews-style reminder: God is not unjust; He will not forget the love you show Him by helping His people.

Key Truths

  • Public response does not define personal worth; God already settled that question.
  • Faithful service often becomes invisible to those who benefit from it most.
  • Hidden obedience is treasured by heaven and will be rewarded by God.
  • Gratitude delayed is not gratitude denied; recognition may come later—or eternally.
  • Jesus Himself kept serving despite inconsistent human thanks, modeling our path.

Response

  • Anchor your identity in what God says about you, not in applause or silence.
  • Keep serving the people closest to you even when they seem to overlook it.
  • Practice secret generosity and service this week—do good that only the Father sees.
  • Verbally thank someone whose faithfulness you’ve come to expect; be the “one leper” who returns.
  • When discouragement rises, speak aloud: “The Father sees, and that is enough.”

Closing

Even Jesus healed ten and was thanked by one; He still moved on to preach, suffer, die, and rise for us. Our call is the same: love, give, and serve from a heart fixed on God’s smile, not people’s nod.

“The Father sees.”

Prayer

Father, purify our motives. Let us find joy in unseen faithfulness, strength when gratitude is scarce, and confidence in who we are to You. Help us serve others as worship to You, trusting that You see and will reward in Your perfect way.
