Does It Really Matter What You Believe?

Scripture References

  • Romans 3:21-26

Overview

Many people say, “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere,” but this message challenges that claim. While every religion may contain elements of beauty, they are radically different in what they teach about God, humanity, and salvation. The call is to consider the person of Jesus—His life, ministry, death, and resurrection—and to recognize that we are made right with God by faith in Jesus alone. From that place of grace, we become Christ’s ambassadors, showing His love to people who do not yet know Him.

Context

This teaching is the fourth and final week in a series called “God Never Said That.” The session is structured around three life-group discussion questions: an icebreaker about childhood spiritual influences, reflection on the impact of Jesus’ ministry, and an application question that leads to action.

Main Points

1. The Common Misbelief

  • Society often repeats:

“It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere.”

  • The speaker notes that sincerity alone cannot erase the profound differences among world religions.
  • Recognizing beauty in various faiths does not eliminate the fact that their core claims about God and salvation are “absolutely and completely not the same.”

2. Discussion Question 1: Childhood Spiritual Influences

  • Participants are asked to recall what shaped them spiritually while growing up.
  • Example given: a traditional denominational church experience marked more by ritual (standing, sitting, robes, hymns) than by a felt relationship with God.

3. Consider Jesus—not “Religion”

  • Jesus came to be a bridge between sinful people and a holy God, not to start another religion.
  • Reflect on who He was, what He said, what He did, and the reality of His resurrection.
  • Personal testimony: discovering Jesus in college revealed His grace—“a friend of sinners” who saves by grace through faith, not by works.

4. Discussion Question 2: What About Jesus Impacts You Most?

  • Group members share which aspect of Jesus’ life or ministry most personally affects them (e.g., His grace, acceptance of outsiders, miracles, teaching).

5. Romans 3:21-26—Salvation by Faith Alone

  • Reading sets the theological foundation: all have sinned; we are justified by faith in Jesus, not by performance, church membership, or self-improvement.
  • Refrain emphasized: “Faith in Jesus… Jesus and Jesus alone.”

6. Ambassadors for Christ

  • Earth is not the Christian’s ultimate home; believers are “God’s highest-ranking diplomats” sent from heaven.
  • Our role is to represent Christ and extend His good news and love to others.

    “You are his ambassador.”

7. Discussion Question 3 (Application): Showing Jesus’ Love

  • Ask: “What is God calling you to do to show His love to people who don’t know Him?”
  • Potential spheres: family, workplace, gym, sports teams, hobby groups.

Key Truths

  • Sincerity cannot substitute for truth; what you believe truly matters.
  • World religions are not interchangeable; their core claims sharply diverge.
  • Jesus offers grace that removes the burden of measuring up; salvation is received by faith.
  • All Christians are appointed as ambassadors, representing Christ’s kingdom on earth.
  • Real faith expresses itself in concrete acts of love toward those far from God.

Response

  • Examine the spiritual influences that still shape your view of God.
  • Re-read Romans 3:21-26 and thank Jesus for grace you could never earn.
  • Identify one person or group who needs to experience Christ’s love through you.
  • Plan and carry out a specific act—conversation, service, invitation—that points them to Jesus.
  • Pray regularly for the courage and compassion to live as His ambassador.
