The Power of Consistency

Scripture References

  • Romans 7:15
  • Daniel 6:4

Overview

Consistency, not talent, background, or education, determines the trajectory of our year and our life. We become what we do repeatedly, not what we do occasionally. Using Daniel’s daily prayer life and deliverance from the lions’ den as the model, the message urges us to pre-decide—“With God’s help, I am consistent”—so that spiritual strength, relationships, health, finances, and ministry all flourish through steady, God-empowered habits.

Main Points

Why Consistency Matters

  • Your consistency shapes every arena: spiritual strength, ministry impact, physical health, relational intimacy, and financial potential.
  • Many feel “the only thing I’m consistent at is being inconsistent.” Even Paul admitted, “I want to do what’s right, but I don’t.” (Romans 7:15)
  • “Successful people do consistently what other people do occasionally.”

  • We are not defined by rare heroic moments but by daily, ordinary faithfulness.

Daniel—A Case Study in Steady Faith

  • Background: In 605 BC Babylon deported Israel’s brightest youth; Daniel rose under King Darius because of unusual reliability.
  • Babylonian rivals tried to “cancel” him but “couldn’t find anything to criticize or condemn” (Daniel 6:4).
    • qualities listed: faithful, always responsible, completely trustworthy.
  • A decree forbade prayer to any god but the king for 30 days.
  • Daniel “knelt down as usual…three times a day…just as he had always done.” His public victory (lions’ den) was rooted in private practice (prayer closet).
  • God shut the lions’ mouths; Daniel emerged unharmed “because he had trusted in his God.”

Three Practices That Grow Consistency

1. Start with the Why

  • Resolutions fail because they flow from desire, not devotion. A compelling why turns wishful thinking into devotion.
  • Examples of strong whys:
    • Seek God daily so generations after you know His grace.
    • Strengthen marriage to model covenant faith for children and grandchildren.
    • Gain financial stability to live generous, worry-free lives for God’s purposes.
  • “When your values are clear, your decisions are easier.”

2. Plan to Fail

  • Consistency ≠ perfection. Daniel surely missed some prayer times—he was human.
  • An all-or-nothing mindset kills progress: one failure = “I’m a failure.”
    • Illustration: Jiu-jitsu coach: the hardest belt is the white belt because most people never start; a black belt is just a white belt that never quit.
  • Practical tip: If you miss a day, “don’t miss two.” Expect slip-ups; resume immediately.

3. Fall in Love with the Process

  • Don’t obsess over distant goals; celebrate today’s obedience.
    • Win = showing up to practice, not merely earning the next belt.
  • You are successful the moment you honor God today, long before you hit the final target.

Pre-Decide: With God’s Help

  • We lack the strength on our own; Jesus supplies it.
  • “With God’s help, I am consistent.”

  • Declare specific commitments:
    • “With God’s help, I walk three times a week.”
    • “With God’s help, I read His Word daily.”
    • “With God’s help, we pray together as a couple.”
  • Decide now, not in the heat of temptation, how you will act when the moment arises.

Key Truths

  • Consistency outperforms occasional effort in every sphere of life.
  • A clear, compelling why transforms desire into lasting devotion.
  • Momentary failure is expected; what you do next determines your trajectory.
  • Private disciplines prepare you for public trials.
  • You are successful whenever you honor God today, not only when you reach the goal.

Response

  • Identify one area God is calling you to steadier faithfulness.
  • Articulate your why in a single, motivating sentence.
  • Build a simple, realistic plan that allows for missed days yet prevents two in a row.
  • Celebrate each day you show up—track progress, thank God, keep going.
  • Voice the declaration daily: “With God’s help, I am consistent.”

Closing

The same Spirit who shut the lions’ mouths empowers our everyday habits. Decide before the crisis that, with God’s help, you will live faithfully today. Private prayer, steady obedience, and grace for every misstep forge a life that glorifies Christ and blesses others.

“With God’s help, I am consistent.”

Prayer

Lord, by the power of Your Word and the presence of Your Spirit, give us a clear why, grace when we fall, and joy in the daily process so that we may honor You consistently and reflect Jesus to a watching world.
