There Is a God in Heaven

Scripture References

  • Daniel 1
  • Daniel 2:28

Overview

Even in a culture that belittles God’s ways, our King is still on the throne. Looking at Daniel 1, the message shows how Daniel and his teenage friends stood firm in conviction while loving well in Babylon. Their secret: they resolved ahead of time who they were and whom they would serve, trusting the declaration repeated throughout the sermon—“There is a God in heaven.”

Main Points

Cultural tension: living for Jesus in a pull-away world

  • Everyday questions: honoring marriage, sexual integrity, raising kids to know Jesus, loving the neighbor who won’t mow.
  • Story: Neighbor’s child said Craig had the ugliest yard; Craig’s quick comeback exposed how easily conflict gets personal.
  • Temptations: dig in and lose relationships or drift and lose convictions.
  • Warning: trade convictions for convenience and you erode the very foundation of life in Christ.

Babylon’s strategy: strip identity and indoctrinate

  • 605 BC: King Nebuchadnezzar (boo!) besieged Jerusalem, destroyed Solomon’s temple, took sacred objects.
  • Hand-picked the best Jewish teenagers—handsome, smart, royal blood—and immersed them in Babylonian language, literature, food.
  • Renamed them from God-honoring Hebrew names to Babylonian god names.
    • Daniel (“God is my Judge”) → Belteshazzar (“Bel protect the king”).
    • Insight: In the oldest manuscripts Daniel consistently misspells Belteshazzar—an intentional jab saying, “You can rename me, but you can’t redefine me.”
  • Satan attacks first at identity: “You’re worthless…God can’t use you.” Respond with who God says you are—new creation, overcomer, child of God.

Daniel’s resolution: predetermined obedience

  • Faced with royal food dedicated to pagan gods—delicious, easy to justify.
  • Daniel 1:8: “Daniel resolved / determined / made up his mind / purposed in his heart” not to defile himself.
    • He lived in Babylon but refused to let Babylon live in him.
  • Respectful approach: asked permission for a 10-day test—vegetables and water only. No public protest, no all-caps rant.
  • Result: looked healthier and stronger than those eating the king’s food; God granted knowledge, wisdom, and influence.

Stand strong AND love well

  • Loud “truth” without love changes no one; desire to make a point can forfeit the chance to make a difference.
  • Daniel models: unshakable convictions + humble, relational posture.
  • Practical pre-decisions:
    • Seek God first each day.
    • Worship weekly, in-person or online.
    • Tithe before spending.
    • Refuse gossip at work.
    • Limit social media to less time than in God’s Word.
    • Pre-decide sexual purity—don’t wait for “Netflix-and-buttons-popping” moments.

“There is a God in heaven” — hope in hostile times

  • No matter elections, culture wars, or personal crises, God sets up and tears down kings.
  • Greater is He who is in us; therefore we can be different—better—in integrity, generosity, marriage, and service.
  • Compromise would have erased Daniel’s impact; anger without love would have cost his life. Conviction plus love changed an empire.

Key Truths

  • Identity in Christ must be settled before temptation appears.
  • Predetermined convictions protect us when culture offers convenient compromise.
  • Influence grows when truth is delivered with honor and respect.
  • God rewards those who honor Him, even in hostile environments.
  • Hope rests on this unchanging reality: there is a God in heaven who still rules.

Response

  • Resolve today what you will and will not do to honor God.
  • Remind yourself daily of who you are in Christ when lies attack.
  • Speak truth in love—ask questions, serve, and earn permission to be heard.
  • Live visibly different: integrity at work, generosity with money, purity in relationships.
  • Pray for Holy Spirit wisdom before reacting to cultural tension.

Closing

The same God who sustained four captive teens sustains us in today’s “Babylon.” Stand firm without compromise, yet love so well that people notice the difference and are drawn to God.

“There is a God in heaven.”

Because He reigns, we can live in this world without letting the world live in us.

Prayer

Father, empower us by Your Spirit to remain faithful in conviction and rich in love. Give us courage to stand for Your truth and wisdom to speak it with compassion so that our lives point people to the God who is still on the throne.
