Overview

Isaiah foretold that God would send a Son whose very name would answer our deepest confusion and pain: the “Wonderful Counselor.” Pastor Craig showed how Jesus fulfills that promise, unpacking what it means to have a supernatural Advisor who guides our steps, comforts our souls, and heals our hearts. When the world offers shallow slogans, believers can rely on the Counselor who speaks through His Word, His Spirit, and His people.

Main Points

1. A 700-Year-Old Promise

  • Isaiah prophesied to a spiritually distracted, anxious nation; they had religion without relationship.
  • Into that unrest God promised a child:

“He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

  • Hebrew: pelle (y) = miraculous, beyond understanding; yoetz = counselor/advisor.

2. Who Is the Counselor?

  • John 14: Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as “another Counselor” (paraklētos) — one who comes alongside to help, defend, and guide.
  • Unlike human counselors, He is divinely wise, perfectly trustworthy, and present forever.

3. He Guides Our Steps

  • God’s primary voice is His Word; He never contradicts it.
  • We filter our experience through Scripture, not Scripture through experience.
  • The more time spent in Scripture and prayer, the more clearly we recognize His voice (illustration: Pastor’s learning to pick out his tail number in air-traffic chatter).
  • Practical indicators of His guidance: open/closed doors, inner peace or restraint, counsel from godly friends, worship moments, prayer.

4. He Comforts Our Souls

  • King James renders paraklētos “Comforter.”
  • Isaiah 66:13 — God comforts like a mother with her child.
Illustration: childhood boo-boo — dad: “rub dirt on it”; mom: Scooby-Doo band-aid and grape popsicle. Presence matters.
  • Christians often become the tangible expression of that comfort for one another (Pastor’s early ministry visit where he only wept with a grieving family).

5. He Heals Our Hearts

  • Psalm 147:3 — He binds up the brokenhearted.
  • The Counselor sees wounds we hide: abuse, betrayal, insecurity, addiction.
  • Testimony: Pastor’s freedom from alcohol, deception, unforgiveness, and present anxiety over daughters’ health — ongoing healing.
  • Because He knows every layer of pain, He can heal every layer.

6. Responding to the Wonderful Counselor

  • Come as you are; confess sin; surrender decisions.
  • Reject culture’s “follow your feelings.”
  • Draw near; He will draw near.
  • Salvation invitation: John 3:16 — the Counselor came because the Father loves the world.

Key Truths

  • Jesus is not merely a giver of advice; He is divine, miraculous guidance in person.
  • God’s counsel never conflicts with God’s Word.
  • Recognition of His voice grows with proximity to His presence.
  • True comfort is found in presence — first His, then often expressed through His people.
  • No hurt is hidden from the Counselor who alone can heal the whole heart.

Response

  • Immerse yourself daily in Scripture to tune your ear to His voice.
  • Bring every decision, fear, and wound to Jesus in honest prayer.
  • Accept and extend comfort: be present with someone in pain this week.
  • Replace “follow your feelings” with “follow the Counselor.”
  • Share the promise of the Wonderful Counselor with someone searching for direction.

Closing

Pastor Craig invited all carrying confusion, hurt, or heavy choices to cast their cares on the Wonderful Counselor who guides, comforts, and heals.

“We don’t need more broken advice from a broken world; we need true advice from a God who loves us.”
Those who surrendered to Jesus were assured that the Counselor will never leave or forsake them.

Prayer

Pastor prayed that God would grant wisdom for decisions, pour out comfort that transcends understanding, and bring healing to every hidden wound, thanking Him for being the ever-present Wonderful Counselor.
