Called to Break Bread: Living in Unity as the Body of Christ

Scripture References

  • John 17
  • Romans 12

Overview

Believers are called to “break bread” together—an everyday picture of the deep unity Jesus prayed for in John 17. Though we often argue over trivial things, Christ desires that His people stand as one body, displaying His love and power to the world. Drawing on Paul’s picture of the church in Romans 12, the message celebrates our different gifts working together and offers stories of what happens when Christians refuse to let differences divide them.

Main Points

We often fracture over silly things

  • Light-hearted examples: friends racing to pay the lunch bill, spouses arguing about keys or directions, mother-daughter squabbles over clothing, debates about dishwasher loading.
  • These stories expose how easily relationships strain over non-essentials.

Jesus prayed for our complete unity (John 17)

  • Quoted portion of Jesus’ prayer: He gave us His glory so “they may be one.”
  • Unity matters to Christ because it shows the world the Father’s love and confirms that the Father sent the Son.

Why unity is so powerful

  • Strength multiplies when believers stand together; fear and hardship lose their grip.
  • Example: after a local tornado, Christians from many places united to serve; national news noticed.
  • Unity keeps people from walking through depression, anxiety, or other trials alone; faithful friends become God’s tangible care.

One body, many members (Romans 12)

  • Paul’s analogy: just as a human body has many parts with different functions, the church is one body with diverse gifts.
  • Every member “belongs to all the others”; difference is by God’s design and is good.

Different doesn’t mean divided

  • Churches often split over methods—hymnals vs. bands, choirs vs. video teaching—yet these are only tools.
  • The heart of worship and fidelity to Christ are what matter.
  • We are called to complete, not compete; to build up, not judge or compare.

Living examples of unity

  • Story: Women emerging from hard life situations encourage each newcomer; shared pain becomes a bridge to mutual support.
  • Story: Multiple churches near a college campus brainstorm together on reaching students; an older pastor humbly asks a younger one for help.
  • Story: A biracial speaker, shaped by her parents’ teaching, now intentionally loves people beyond color lines and promotes unity wherever she goes.

The church at its best

  • When the body moves in step with the Spirit, it lifts the oppressed, cares for the sick, serves the persecuted, and fights poverty.
  • Resources abound—books, blogs, conferences, music—but unity shines brightest in unseen daily acts: intentional prayer, sacrificial giving, fulfilling the Great Commission side by side.
  • The global family of God is “beautiful, Spirit-empowered, an extension of Jesus Christ.”

Key Truths

  • Jesus’ glory in us is meant to produce visible, relational unity.
  • Unity is a testimony; when believers love one another, the world recognizes Jesus’ mission.
  • God designed diversity of gifts so the body could function fully, not fragment.
  • Non-essential differences in style or method must never overshadow the essential call to love.
  • Small, consistent acts of support often demonstrate Christ’s body more powerfully than large public platforms.

Response

  • Refuse to argue over non-essentials; pursue peace in everyday interactions.
  • Thank God for the different gifts and styles within the church instead of criticizing them.
  • Look for someone walking through hardship and offer practical, consistent support.
  • Collaborate with other believers and churches to advance the gospel in your community.
  • Pray daily for greater unity in the body of Christ and guard your own heart from division.

Closing

The body of Christ is a global, Spirit-filled family called to display Jesus through united love. Differences were never meant to divide us but to complete us. As we celebrate and protect our oneness, the world sees a living picture of God’s heart.

Prayer

Father, we say “yes and amen” to Jesus’ prayer for unity in the body of Christ. As far as it depends on us, help us live at peace with our brothers and sisters. Make us peacemakers and unity promoters. Thank You for this study; grow our excitement for the purpose You’ve given us as Your body. Be glorified in all we do, in Jesus’ name.
