Overview

Jesus’ followers were caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee and panicked, asking, “Teacher, don’t You care if we drown?” (Mark 4). Pastor Craig used this moment to show that every believer faces storms yet can find peace. He anchored the message in two truths: we are never alone in the storm, and storms always serve a greater purpose. Because Christ is in the boat, we can transfer our anxiety to Him and experience His calm—even before circumstances change.

Context

• Service is part of the “Miracles” series.
• Pastor Craig released a new book, “Winning the War in Your Mind for Teens,” and encouraged inviting friends for Easter next week.

Main Points

1. The disciples’ unexpected storm

  • Jesus initiated the trip: “Let’s go to the other side.”
  • Sea of Galilee is 13 mi × 8 mi, ringed by hills—perfect conditions for sudden, furious squalls.
  • Jewish superstition: deep water = realm of demons and death.
  • Their fear shows that believers are not exempt from trouble (John 16:33).

2. Two things to remember in every storm

Sub-heading the pastor repeated and built the rest of the sermon on.

  1. You are in the storm with His presence

    • Jesus slept on a cushion while waves crashed; His nearness, not circumstances, secures peace.
    • Never let the “what” of the storm eclipse the “Who” in the boat.
    • Repeated promises: Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:9; Psalm 23; Matthew 28:20.
  2. You are in the storm for His purpose

    • Going to the other side was Jesus’ idea; obedience, not disobedience, placed them there.
    • Some lessons can only be learned in the storm, not on the safety of the shore.

3. When Jesus speaks, storms obey

  • He rebuked the wind: “Quiet! Be still!” and immediate calm followed.
  • One word from God can change everything—He retains absolute authority.

4. Cast, don’t carry (1 Peter 5:7)

  • “Cast” = transfer the weight; letting go without handing it to God only crushes you.
  • Practical application: name the burden—health, finances, relationship, future—and hand it to Christ.

5. Modern-day testimony: Kristen’s healing

  • Story: Kristen from Life.Church Overland Park was diagnosed with aggressive tongue cancer (2021). Her family, life group, and church laid hands on her, praying for healing. Surgeons re-examined and found the tumor dramatically smaller; after one surgery she was declared cancer-free. Her 16-year-old daughter’s faith was solidified: “I will no longer question God.”

6. Ultimate victory is certain

  • One day Jesus will rebuke every sin-filled storm permanently—no more sickness, sorrow, or death.
  • Until then, stay in the boat (the Church), hold onto one another, and believe for miracles.

Key Truths

  • Jesus’ presence is more powerful than any circumstance you face.
  • Being in God’s will can still place you in the path of a storm.
  • Peace is found not in control but in trusting the One who controls the storm.
  • Casting anxiety on God is an act of faith, not irresponsibility.
  • Temporary storms prepare us for eternal calm when Christ makes all things new.

Response

  • Acknowledge the specific storm you’re in instead of denying it.
  • Transfer that weight to Jesus in prayer—even if you must do it repeatedly.
  • Stay connected to other believers; don’t bail on the boat.
  • Speak God’s promises aloud when fear rises.
  • Invite someone facing their own storm to church this Easter.

Closing

Pastor Craig reminded the church that every follower of Jesus is either heading into a storm, in one, or coming out. The promise of Christ’s continual presence and purposeful leading sustains us now and guarantees complete restoration later.

“Never let the presence of a storm cause you to doubt the presence of God.”

Prayer

Pastor Craig led the congregation in surrendering specific burdens—health, finances, relationships, anxiety—asking God for miracles, healing, unity, and peace, while thanking Him that He hears and cares.
