Overview

Jesus did not rescue us merely so we could stumble back into old chains—He saved us for lasting freedom. Week 4 of “Heal Your Hurting Mind” shows how to guard that freedom: be careful with what shapes you and be prayerful in every battle. Using Galatians 5:1 and the full armor passage of Ephesians 6, Pastor Craig teaches that grace initiates freedom and our faith participates by standing firm, resisting the enemy’s post-progress attacks, and living disciplined, Spirit-dependent lives.

Main Points

Freedom is Christ’s stated purpose

  • Galatians 5:1 repeats the same Greek root twice—freedom is the intention, not an accident.
  • Jesus forgives sin and removes anything that keeps us under a lesser master.
  • Paul’s warning: after being set free, “make sure you stay free.”

The enemy often strikes hardest after progress

  • 1 Peter 5:8: the devil prowls, especially targeting believers who are healing.
  • Fear whispers, “What if the breakthrough doesn’t last?” Scripture answers, “Stand firm.”

Be careful: guard the practical

  1. Inputs
    • What gains your attention gains entrance to your heart.
    • Social media, news feeds, music, shows, and certain conversations can fuel anxiety, lust, or comparison.
    • If you dislike the outcome, change the input.
  2. Habits
    • “A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). Healing happens by grace and hard work; healthy habits keep you healed.
    • Examples: daily Scripture first thing in the morning, honoring a weekly Sabbath, limiting screen time, scheduling true rest.
    • Story: Craig described restructuring his preaching calendar and learning to fly small planes to break anxious study loops.
  3. Relationships
    • Walk with the wise and become wise (Proverbs 13:20); bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33).
    • Love everyone, but redefine access if someone continually drags you back into criticism, addiction, or negativity.

Be prayerful: engage the spiritual

  • Prayer is not preparation for battle; prayer is the battle.
  • It reminds us we are never in control and keeps us close to the One who is.
  • Continual prayer keeps the armor fastened and alerts us to creeping lies.

Stand firm in the armor of God (Ephesians 6)

“You are called to stand, and you are called to pray.”

  • Belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, gospel shoes, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit.
  • After doing everything you can do (stand), invite God to do what only He can do (pray).
  • Freedom is guarded moment by moment: “Be careful and be prayerful.”

Invitation to salvation and freedom

  • Grace has already initiated—Christ died and rose.
  • Faith participates by surrendering: open-handed, turning from sin, receiving the gift of new life.
  • Many responded, “I am surrendering my life to Jesus.”

Key Truths

  • Freedom is Jesus’ goal; bondage is never His after-plan.
  • Progress attracts attack—healing must be guarded.
  • What fills your mind shapes your heart, and your heart steers your life.
  • Healthy habits are grace-empowered guardrails that keep you free.
  • Prayer is the believer’s primary battleground and lifeline.
  • The same Jesus who sets you free is faithful to keep you free.

Response

  • Examine your digital, musical, and conversational inputs; eliminate anything that fuels anxiety or impurity.
  • Establish one new life-giving habit this week that reinforces mental and spiritual health.
  • Evaluate your closest relationships; choose wise, faith-building friends.
  • Pray daily through the pieces of the armor, standing and inviting God’s power over every thought.
  • When fear whispers, declare: “The One who set me free will keep me free.”

Closing

Pastor Craig ended by having the congregation plant their feet, open their hands, and commit to lifelong dependence on Jesus:

“The same Jesus who set me free is faithful to keep me free.”
Remain careful with what shapes you and prayerful in every season, trusting the God of peace to heal—and keep healing—your hurting mind.
