Greatness Is Serving: Jesus Washes Feet

Scripture References

  • Mark 10:43
  • John 13

Overview

Jesus settles the “GOAT” debate by redefining greatness as humble service. Drawing from Mark 10:43 and the foot-washing scene in John 13, Pastor Craig shows that Jesus loved “to the fullest extent” by taking the place of a slave. Because He washed our dirty feet, it is impossible to love Jesus without serving people. Every disciple must “get up, kneel down, and wash feet” wherever a need appears.

Context

The message opens with playful polls on the greatest basketball player, footballer, and superhero. The lighthearted debate sets up the contrast: in God’s Kingdom greatness is measured by service, not status.

Main Points

Greatness Redefined (Mark 10)

  • The world flashes its greatness: possessions, posts, platforms.
  • Jesus says, “Not so with you.” Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.
  • Greatness = service, not spotlight; action, not attention.

Seven Acts of Service (John 13)

  • Hours before the cross, Jesus chooses a final meal with friends.
  • “Having loved His own…He loved them to the end” (telos: to the uttermost, without limit).
  • In two verses Jesus performs seven movements:
    1. Got up from the meal.
    2. Took off His outer garment.
    3. Wrapped a towel around His waist.
    4. Poured water into a basin.
    5. Knelt down.
    6. Washed the disciples’ feet.
    7. Dried them with the towel.
  • Removing the robe exposed what was inside—humility. God cares about how we serve, not just what we do.

Proud Hearts & Dirty Feet

  • At the Passover table the disciples argue over “who is greatest.”
  • Jesus scans the room and sees two things: proud hearts and dirty feet.
  • Any disciple would have washed Jesus’ feet, but none wanted to rank themselves below the others.
  • Jesus—even knowing Judas’ betrayal—washes every set of feet.
  • Modern parallel: churches sometimes critique “dirty feet” instead of washing them.

Get Up, Kneel Down, Serve

  • Most meaningful moments in life happen standing up, not sitting down.
    • Story: Pastor Craig recalls milestones—conversion, proposing to Amy, children’s births—none occurred while seated.
  • Action steps:
    • Get up: turn off the screen, leave the comfort zone.
    • Kneel down: take the posture of a servant.
    • Wash feet: meet the practical, sometimes messy need in front of you.
  • Illustration: Helping an elderly woman in a hardware store trim her trees—“Today I’m a yard boy.”
  • Watch for Holy Spirit nudges: “I can do that; this one’s mine.”

Serve Anyway

  • Excuses Jesus could have used: the disciples didn’t deserve it; Judas would betray Him. He served anyway.
  • When you serve, some will overlook, expect, or criticize you. Serve anyway.
  • Every part of Christ’s body has a role; if you withhold your gift, something God wants done goes undone.

Key Truths

  • Kingdom greatness is measured by service, not status.
  • Jesus’ love has no end; He demonstrates it through humble action.
  • Proud hearts often overlook obvious needs; servants notice and respond.
  • You cannot truly love Jesus without serving people.
  • “I can do that—this one’s mine” turns ordinary moments into eternal impact.

Response

  • Get up from comfort and availability-killers.
  • Look for unserved needs at church, work, school, and home.
  • Volunteer in a ministry where your gifts are missing.
  • Serve people who may never thank you, including those who may hurt you.
  • Adopt the daily prayer: “Show me a need I can meet today.”

Closing

Craig challenges every believer: if you are part of Christ’s body yet not serving, something God intends is left undone. Because Jesus washed our feet, we now stand up, kneel down, and wash others’.

“Greatness isn’t about status; it’s about serving.”

Prayer

Pastor Craig led listeners to surrender to Christ, ask forgiveness, and commit their lives to serve others.
