Overview

Craig Groeschel challenges anyone who has started settling for smaller dreams with God. Using Abraham and Sarah’s long wait for a child, he shows that while we often think in terms of simple addition, God works in exponential multiplication. A single seed of faith—whether a prayer, a step of obedience, or a free Bible—can produce a harvest far beyond what we imagine.

Main Points

Lowered expectations

  • Many start with bold prayers—a godly spouse, a flourishing business, perfect parenting—but disappointment shrinks the ask to “God, just do something.”
  • “You have no idea what God may do through a single seed planted in faith.” (central refrain, repeated throughout)

  • Abraham and Sarah endured at least ten years (“some time later”) between God’s promise (Genesis 12) and any visible sign (Genesis 15).
  • Like them, we question: “God, did You forget? Did I even hear You right?”

Addition thinking vs. multiplication thinking

  • We think, “Add to my life”; God says, “Multiply.”
    • Illustration: Garden of Eden—God’s first command was “Be fruitful and multiply,” not “add.”
    • Story: Craig’s father-in-law asked for grandchildren; Craig responded with six, joking “we serve an exponential God.”
  • Jesus’ parable of the sower—some seed yields 30, 60, 100-fold.

When nothing seems to be happening

  • A seed under soil looks inactive, yet sun and rain are working; roots form before fruit appears.
  • “Just because you don’t see anything doesn’t mean God isn’t doing something.”
  • If God met every expectation, He couldn’t exceed them.

God lifts our perspective

  • Abraham complained inside his tent; God pulled him outside and said, “Count the stars… that’s how many descendants you will have.”
  • We measure by unmet desires (a son); God envisions nations—including us.
    • Galatians 3:29—those who belong to Christ are Abraham’s seed.
    • Song reference: “Father Abraham had many sons… I am one of them and so are you.”

Modern examples of one seed

  • Story: A Gideon handed college-age Craig a small New Testament. Months later, Ephesians 2 led him to Christ on a softball field.
  • Story: That conversion led to ministry, church planting, and eventually the YouVersion Bible App—now 315 million+ downloads, still free because his own life-changing Bible was free.
  • One prayer, one gift, one act of service can initiate an exponential spiritual chain reaction.

Our lives are seeds

  • Jesus said a mustard-seed of faith can move mountains.
  • A kernel must die to multiply; Jesus’ own death shows the pattern—one life given so many can live.
  • Every believer’s life, sown in faith, can bear extraordinary fruit for generations.

Key Truths

  • God often delays to deepen roots before revealing fruit.
  • We calculate in addition; God acts in multiplication.
  • Unseen does not equal inactive—God works beneath the surface.
  • God’s promises may outsize our current perspective, but they never fail.
  • A single step of obedience can echo through countless lives.

Response

  • Lift your expectations; pray bold, promise-sized prayers again.
  • Plant a new seed: share Scripture, serve, give, invite, forgive.
  • Step outside the “tent” of limited perspective; worship and remember God’s higher ways.
  • Trust God’s timing—keep watering the seed through persistent faith.
  • Offer your whole life as a seed; ask God to multiply it for His kingdom.

Closing

Craig urged the church to stop settling and start sowing. God, who can do “exceedingly and abundantly more,” still multiplies every seed of faith. Our part is to plant; His part is the exponential harvest.

“You have no idea what our God can produce through a single seed planted in faith.”

Prayer

Craig prayed that God would renew discouraged hearts, stretch faith, and use every willing life as fertile seed for His glory, trusting His perfect will, provision, and timing.
