You in 5 Years: Reaping What You Sow

Scripture References

  • Galatians 6
  • Hosea 10:13
  • Mark 4:2

Overview

Where will you be five years from now—spiritually, relationally, financially, and physically? Craig Groeschel argues that the answer is largely predictable because “the habits you have today will shape who you become tomorrow.” Drawing from Galatians 6, he lays out three immutable laws of sowing and reaping, reviews the habit-building steps covered throughout the series, and presses listeners to plant godly seeds now so they can harvest righteousness later.

Main Points

Visualize Your Future

  • Add five years to your current age and project your life in four arenas: spiritual, relational, financial, physical.
  • Two contrasting trajectories exist in each arena—growth or decline—based on current habits.
  • External forces matter, but daily choices carry the greatest weight.

“Do you like the direction your habits are taking you?”

Habits Determine Direction

  • Intentions and hopes do not set direction; habits do.
  • At birth you resemble your parents; at death you resemble your habits.

Three Laws of Sowing & Reaping (Galatians 6)

Paul’s warning: “Do not be deceived—God cannot be mocked.”

  1. You reap what you sow

    • Apple seeds never produce grapes.
    • Sow godly habits → godly outcomes; sow fleshly habits → destruction.
    • If you don’t like what you’re reaping, change what you’re sowing.
  2. You reap more than you sow

    • God multiplies the seed: one seed can yield 30, 60, 100-fold (Mark 4:2).
    • Illustration: marital “multipliers”—honor multiplies affection; disrespect multiplies conflict.
    • Story (adapted from The Compound Effect):
      • Scenario A: Inconsistent church attendance, adds one nightly glass of wine (+125 calories). After 27 months he gains 67 lbs, drifts spiritually, struggles at work and home.
      • Scenario B: Consistent in church, removes the same 125 calories, loses 67 lbs, grows spiritually, is promoted, gives generously, and enjoys deeper intimacy.
  3. You reap after you sow

    • Harvest comes in a later season; delay tempts people to quit.
    • Small daily decisions feel insignificant (five days of prayer, two weeks at the gym, a month of skipped lattes), but they accumulate.
    • Success is measured by seeds sown, not by immediate visible harvest.

Review of the Series Framework

  1. Spiritual Who – Identity: you behave from who you believe you are.
  2. Spiritual Why – Motive: change to honor God, not self-improvement alone.
  3. Spiritual What – Start one godly habit that reinforces identity.
  4. Spiritual What-Not – Stop one habit that contradicts identity.
  5. Spiritual How – Training, not trying; discipline like an athlete.
  6. Spiritual Impact – Today’s seeds create tomorrow’s legacy.

Keep Planting—Don’t Give Up

  • Faithful disciplines are never wasted; they are “stored up” like heat in water that finally boils at 212 °F.
  • Others will call it luck or overnight success, but it is the unseen accumulation of consistent obedience.
  • Galatians 6: “At the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Key Truths

  • Habits, not intentions, set the trajectory of your life.
  • God’s laws of sowing and reaping are as certain as gravity.
  • Small, consistent choices compound into radical outcomes over time.
  • Change that lasts is spiritual transformation, not mere behavior modification.
  • Faithful, unseen obedience precedes visible, public fruitfulness.

Response

  • Examine every arena of life and name one habit steering you off course; replace it with a godly habit.
  • Keep a “seed-log” this week: record each daily action that aligns with your desired harvest.
  • Celebrate consistency, not just big milestones.
  • Reject discouragement during the waiting season; rehearse Galatians 6 aloud.
  • Share your chosen start-habit and stop-habit with a trusted friend for accountability.

Closing

Your future is not a mystery; it is the harvest of today’s seeds. If you sow to the flesh, you will reap destruction; if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life. Therefore, plant righteousness, stay consistent, and refuse to quit.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your living and active word. Inspire faith, hope, and the courage to sow godly seeds. Reveal habits that lead us away from You, and empower us by Your Spirit to start habits that honor You. Give us endurance to keep planting until the harvest of righteousness appears—for Your glory and for the good of others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
