Digging Ditches: Faith That Prepares for God’s Provision

Scripture References

  • 2 Kings 3

Overview

When life feels like a dry valley and your need is urgent, God may invite you to partner with Him before He sends relief. Looking at Elisha and three thirsty armies in 2 Kings 3, Pastor Craig taught that our greatest need can become a gift because it drives us to depend on God. The sermon moved from desperate circumstances, to worship that shifts perspective, to active obedience—“digging ditches”—that makes room for God’s sudden provision.

Context

• Moab stopped paying taxes to Israel, so the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom marched to fight—only to run out of water after seven days.
• They turned to the prophet Elisha, who first called for a harpist so that worship could usher in God’s word.
• God promised water without wind or rain and victory over Moab, but first the soldiers had to fill the valley with ditches.

Main Points

Your Need Can Drive You to God

  • Everyone needs something only God can supply: healing, provision, peace, strength, etc.
  • “Your greatest need becomes a gift when it drives you to depend on God.”

  • Desperation often reveals our constant but unnoticed dependence on Him.

Worship Is Warfare

  • Elisha asked for a harpist before prophesying—worship reframes problems, invites power, and creates space to hear God.
  • Illustration: Paul and Silas worshiping in prison until chains fell; worship shifts the atmosphere.

Dig the Ditch

  • God’s word: “Make this valley full of ditches… You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water.”
  • “Only God can send the water, but sometimes He asks you to dig a ditch.”

  • Faith doesn’t deny what is seen; it decides whom to believe.
  • Examples Jesus gave: stretch out the withered hand, pick up your mat, wash in Siloam—all acts that paired human obedience with divine power.
  • Modern applications:
    • Parenting – pray daily, place kids in godly environments (LifeKids, Switch).
    • Marriage – apologize first, serve first, seek counseling, pray together.
    • Anxiety – consistently cast cares on Him, saturate mind in Scripture.
    • Community – join a LifeGroup; don’t fight alone.

Keep Digging When Nothing Happens

  • The armies dug all day and saw no change—until “the next morning” water suddenly flowed.
  • God often provides at His time and in His way; “this is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord.”
  • “Show me your faith and I’ll show you My faithfulness.”

  • Galatians reminder: don’t grow weary; in due season you will reap if you don’t give up.

The God of “Suddenly”

  • When we dig faithfully, God can fill suddenly—chains break, anxiety lifts, relationships restore.
  • People may admire the blessing later, unaware of the unseen obedience that prepared the ground.

Key Truths

  • Worship redirects eyes from the problem to the Provider.
  • Faith partners with God; obedience often precedes the miracle.
  • God’s methods and timing rarely match our expectations, yet His power is unmatched.
  • Ongoing obedience in dry seasons positions us for sudden breakthroughs.
  • Real dependence on God produces humility, repentance, and actionable steps, not passive waiting.

Response

  • Identify the area of greatest need and bring it to God honestly.
  • Ask the Spirit, “What ditch do You want me to dig?” and act on what He shows.
  • Establish a rhythm of worship—music, Scripture, prayer—to fight spiritual battles.
  • Engage community: join or strengthen a LifeGroup for mutual encouragement and prayer.
  • Persist; refuse to quit digging even when no change is visible.

Closing

Pastor Craig ended by calling the church to humble confession and full surrender, reminding us that God already “went first” through Jesus. With hands raised, the congregation asked, “Speak to me, God—show me where to dig.” The invitation extended to those far from Christ to repent, believe, and receive new life, because whoever finds God finds life.

Prayer

The pastor led a two–part prayer:

  1. For a hurting, divided world—asking God to comfort, unite, and heal through His church.
  2. For individuals—confessing sin, declaring Jesus as Savior and Lord, and requesting the Holy Spirit’s filling so that believers may hear God’s voice and obey.
