The Perspective of Praise

Scripture References

Primary text

  • Philippians 4:6

Other references

  • Acts 16
  • Acts 16:22
  • Acts 16:25

Overview

Paul wrote “Rejoice in the Lord always” from a Roman jail, proving that peace is possible even in places ripe for anxiety. Pastor Craig showed that the difference lies in how we look at our circumstances—our perspective. When we choose a perspective of praise, we see God’s presence and purpose in the middle of pain, and anxiety loosens its grip.

Main Points

Anxiety, Prison, and Philippians 4

  • Paul’s lifelong dream was to preach in Rome; instead he arrived as a prisoner, chained to guards 24/7 and uncertain of his future.
  • From that setting he penned Philippians 4:6:

“Rejoice in the Lord always… I’ll say it again: Rejoice.”

  • The command feels unrealistic until we remember where Paul was when he wrote it.

“It’s All About Perspective”

“It’s all about perspective.”

  • Perspective = how you see something; the Latin root means “to look through.”
  • Illustration: Magic-Eye picture—nothing appears until you “look through” it; then hidden 3-D dolphins pop out. Praise works the same way: it helps us look through the surface of hardship to see God at work.

Bad-Perspective Version (BPV) vs. Gospel Perspective

  • Craig’s tongue-in-cheek BPV shows how we often read our lives: “What’s happened to me really sucks… I’m quitting life group.”
  • Paul’s real words: his chains had “served to advance the gospel” and even the palace guard knew he was “in chains for Christ.”
  • Truth: The same facts can fuel despair or praise, depending on the lens we choose.

Paul & Silas: Praise Before Provision

  • Acts 16: Beaten with rods, bleeding, locked in the inner cell with feet in stocks.
  • At midnight they prayed and sang hymns—worshiping God for who He is, not for what He had yet to do.
  • During their praise an earthquake shook the prison, doors flew open, chains fell off—deliverance came in the middle of worship.
  • Paul later sat in Rome remembering that previous miracle; even without a new jailbreak he still chose, “Rejoice always.”

Personal Story: When Praise Shifted Anxiety

  • Story: Unusual, breath-stealing anxiety hit Craig while staring at four sermons due in under two days.
    • Counselor’s assessment: “You’re not in that much trouble—look at what’s right.”
    • As Craig forced himself to praise—starting half-hearted, becoming genuine—the perspective of praise landed: his own struggle was helping thousands find hope.
    • New declaration: “If real anxiety makes me more effective in advancing the gospel, bring it on, Jesus.”

Key Truths

  • Praise is not for the “what” we see but for the “who” God is.
  • The key that unlocks a miracle is often the sound of our praise.
  • Pain linked to God’s purpose can advance the gospel.
  • You can rejoice when God delivers and when He doesn’t—His character never changes.
  • Anxiety shrinks when we remember what is still right and good in our lives.

Response

  • Shift your gaze: list what is still right alongside what is wrong.
  • Choose a worship song and sing it before circumstances change.
  • Replace negative self-talk with Philippians 4:6 every time anxiety surfaces.
  • Share your current struggle transparently so it can serve others.
  • Gather with believers (life group, prayer circle) and praise together in the “midnight” hour.

Closing

Paul and Silas worshiped on a cold prison floor, and God shook the earth; Paul later worshiped in Rome with no jailbreak, yet the gospel still advanced. The invitation is the same for us: praise Him in prosperity, praise Him in pain.

“We will praise You when we feel You, and we’ll praise You when we don’t.”

Prayer

The congregation surrendered worries to God, asking the Holy Spirit for peace beyond understanding, praising Him whether or not circumstances change, and many responded to the gospel, turning from sin and giving their lives to Jesus.
