Overview
Spiritual warfare is not an abstract idea; it is the daily reality behind every temptation, distraction and lie. Drawing from Ephesians 6, Pastor J.P. Pokluda showed that followers of Jesus already have everything needed to stand firm—God’s armor, God’s power, God’s Word and God’s presence. The battle is won, but we must actively “put on” what Christ provides, refusing both ignorance and fear while living from a place of victory.
Context
The message was part of Life.Church’s “Book Club” series and grew out of J.P.’s new book, “Your Story Has a Villain.” After recounting a California wildfire that locals ignored unless they were in it, he compared their apathy to Christians who forget they are in a spiritual battle every day.
Main Points
Stand in God’s Strength, Not Your Own
- “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (Ephesians 6:10).
- The enemy is real, organized and hates you, yet is terrified of Jesus.
- Our part is not to panic or chase demons but to take the position Christ already won.
Walk in Truth – Belt
- Spiritual war begins with a fight over what is true.
- Culture pursues “my truth”; disciples pursue capital-T Truth that leads to freedom.
Act in Righteousness – Breastplate
- The heart, like a streaming algorithm, keeps recommending whatever we feed it.
Illustration: A young woman who fills her playlists and shows with toxic relationship content wonders why she only dates “losers.”
- Holy living guards the heart from repeated wounds.
Ready with the Gospel – Shoes
- A normal Christian life includes conversations that redirect people from hell to heaven.
Story: While getting a haircut, J.P. asked his stylist two diagnostic questions and led her to Christ moments after she had begged God for a sign.
Stand Firm in Faith – Shield
- Faith is soaked in the water of God’s promises; it extinguishes flaming lies.
Story: A bar confrontation diffused when one small man called two enormous friends—J.P. likened their arrival to the believer’s confidence that “Greater is He who is in us” (1 John 4:4).
Be Aware of Your Salvation – Helmet
- Wars are fought over territory; spiritual war is fought over the real estate of your mind.
- You can direct your thoughts—choose to rehearse the cross, the empty tomb and God’s faithfulness.
Respond with the Word – Sword
- Jesus answered Satan with memory verses from Deuteronomy; we answer temptation the same way.
- Sample counters:
- Lust → Matthew 5; Job 31:1
- Sexual sin → 1 Corinthians 6
- Anxiety → Philippians 4; 1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 6
- Envy or lack → Matthew 6:33
- Have Scripture loaded and ready before the attack comes.
Engage in Prayer – Access Key
- Prayer unlocks all other armor pieces; without it, we default to distraction.
Story: A golfer who could never pray manifested demonic resistance until simple, Jesus-centered prayer set him free.
- Audit what steals your attention—social media may accomplish what a demon never needs to attempt.
Key Truths
- The Christian fights from victory, not for victory.
- Ignorance of the battle is the enemy’s first win; awareness plus obedience is our stand.
- Righteous habits either strengthen or weaken your defense one choice at a time.
- Scripture memorized is ammunition ready; Scripture forgotten is a sword left sheathed.
- Prayer is not a ritual add-on; it is the lifeline that keeps every piece of armor in place.
Response
- Reject passivity—daily acknowledge the unseen battle.
- Put on truth each morning: open the Bible before opening your phone.
- Guard your inputs: remove media that trains your heart toward unrighteous desires.
- Memorize at least one verse for every recurring temptation.
- Share the gospel with someone this week; look for the one who is already asking God for help.
- Pray through the armor piece by piece, asking the Spirit to fill and protect you.
Closing
You have an enemy, but you also have armor, authority and the indwelling Spirit. Stand firm. When fiery darts fly, lift the shield of faith, draw the sword of the Spirit and remember:
“Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”
The battle belongs to the Lord; live like it.
