Hold Firmly to What We Believe

Scripture References

  • Hebrews 4:14
  • Hebrews 4:15

Overview

Hebrews 4 invites us three times with the phrase “let us.” In this second invitation the writer says, “let us hold firmly to what we believe.” Pastor Craig reminds us that we can cling to our faith because Jesus is our great High Priest—He sympathizes with our weaknesses, has faced every temptation without sin, and now intercedes for us from heaven. In a culture of shifting spiritual opinions, we ground ourselves in the historic, biblical confession summarized in the Apostles Creed.

Main Points

Our Great High Priest

  • Jesus, the Son of God, has “entered heaven” and now sits at the right hand of the Father.
  • He “understands our weaknesses”; He was tested in every way we are, yet never sinned.
  • Right now He is making intercession for us—Jesus is literally praying for you.
  • Because of who He is and where He is, our faith is not blind optimism; it rests on a living, sympathetic Savior.

Let Us Hold Firmly

  • The command is corporate: “let us hold firmly.” Faith is strengthened in community.
  • Holding firmly means refusing to loosen our grip when circumstances shake us.
  • We look back to the eyewitness resolve of the disciples who saw the risen Christ ascend and were willing to die rather than deny that reality.

The Drift Toward “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism”

  • A widely-held modern view:
    • Moralistic – God just wants me to be nice and good.
    • Therapeutic – If I’m good, God’s job is to make my life better.
    • Deism – God set the world in motion but stays uninvolved.
  • This outlook is far from the God revealed in Scripture and embodied by Jesus.

The Apostles Creed: Our Historic Anchor

“I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth….”

  • For centuries believers have recited this creed to declare core, non-negotiable truths:
    • God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    • Jesus was conceived by the Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, crucified, died, buried, rose, ascended, and will come again.
    • There is forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
  • When we voice these truths, we rehearse what we are holding firmly to.

Faith in Real-Life Pain

  • Pastor Craig imagines listeners who just received a bad medical report, face financial pressure, marital strain, betrayal, depression, or anger.
  • Because Jesus suffered, understands, and overcame, we can cling to Him in every trial.
  • Nothing can take us out of His hand; His goodness is unchanging even when life is hard.

Key Truths

  • Jesus is both exalted in heaven and personally acquainted with our struggles.
  • Our faith rests on historical reality: Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension.
  • Biblical Christianity is not moralistic therapeutic deism; God is present and engaged.
  • The Apostles Creed summarizes the foundational beliefs Christians worldwide share.
  • Holding firmly is possible because Jesus now intercedes for us and empowers us to overcome.

Response

  • Anchor your confidence in Jesus’ finished work and ongoing intercession.
  • Reject shallow views of God; rehearse the truths of Scripture and the Apostles Creed.
  • In moments of doubt, remind yourself aloud: “Jesus understands my weakness and is praying for me.”
  • Stand with other believers—faith is strengthened together, not in isolation.
  • When suffering hits, refuse to loosen your grip; cling tighter to the One who clung to the cross for you.

Closing

Life’s pressures may tempt us to loosen our grip, yet we have every reason to persevere. Jesus, our sinless and sympathetic High Priest, is both with the Father and with us. His victory over sin and death secures our hope, and His constant prayers sustain our faith. Therefore, whatever we face, we echo Hebrews 4:

“Let us hold firmly to what we believe.”

Prayer

“Father, today I pray for those who may be struggling in their faith. May Your word build faith in us. Help us draw near to You, enter into Your special rest, and, because of who Jesus is and what He did, hold firmly to that which we believe. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
