Overview

Fear feels heavier than ever, yet God never hands His children a spirit of fear. Looking at Mary’s unexpected encounter with the angel in Luke 1, Pastor Craig showed how God often interrupts our carefully crafted plans to lead us into His higher purpose. When that happens, the outcome belongs to God; our part is simple, hard, courageous obedience.

Context

Christmas at the Movies is happening across Life.Church, but for online listeners Pastor Craig began a separate series—“Fear Not.” Each week he will explore one angelic “do not be afraid” in the Christmas story. Today: Mary’s story.

Main Points

1. Grown-up fears are real

  • As kids we feared open closet doors or a limb hanging off the bed; now we fear layoffs, diagnoses, interest rates, global conflicts, AI, and more.
  • “Fear is not the opposite of faith; fear is faith—placed in the worst possible outcome.”

2. God’s purpose often collides with our plans

  • Mary likely imagined a normal life with “Joey,” a small carpentry business, a cozy home, and planned children.
  • God interrupts with an angelic message, redefining everything.
  • Illustration: Childhood “rules” (close the closet, jump over the floor) contrasted with adult anxieties—both show how easily fear builds unspoken scripts.

3. Divine interruptions feel disturbing before they feel holy

  • Mary was “confused and disturbed.” We share that tension when God redirects us.
  • “What we call God’s disturbing interruptions are often God’s divine invitations.”
  • Examples: burning bush for Moses, sheepfold for David, blinding light for Saul.

4. Understanding is optional; trust is essential

  • Mary’s first instinct: “How can this be? I’m a virgin.”
  • We ask the same when the means look impossible.

“You don’t have to understand the plan to trust that God has a purpose.”

5. Favor may not look favorable at first

  • Angel calls Mary “highly favored,” yet the favor involves scandal, risk, and responsibility.
  • Illustration: Pastor’s surprise upgrade to business-class—lavish favor sometimes shows up in ways we never earned, but God’s favor is larger than comfort or material gifts.

6. Nothing is impossible with God

  • Angel anchors Mary’s fear with God’s power—He will accomplish what humans cannot.

7. Obedience belongs to us; outcomes belong to God

  • Mary’s pivotal response:

“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”

  • Question Pastor Craig pressed: “What is God asking you to do or believe right now?”

Key Truths

  • Fear places faith in the worst-case scenario; God calls us to place faith in His character.
  • God’s interruptions are invitations into a story bigger than our five-year plan.
  • You can trust God’s purpose even when you cannot trace His process.
  • Divine favor is sometimes disguised as inconvenience, delay, or radical change.
  • Obedience is our responsibility; outcome management is God’s.

Response

  • Name the fear that is weighing on you and deliberately place it in God’s hands.
  • Repeat Mary’s surrender daily: “I am the Lord’s servant—let Your word be fulfilled in me.”
  • Identify one area where God is interrupting your plan and take the first obedient step.
  • Cast every anxiety on God (pray, journal, tell a trusted believer) instead of rehearsing worst-case outcomes.
  • Look for evidence of God’s favor this week, even if it arrives wrapped as an inconvenience.

Closing

God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. The same God who overshadowed Mary stands beside you now. Whatever weighs on you, hear heaven’s words: “Do not be afraid; you have found favor with God.” When His purpose interrupts your plan, remember—nothing is impossible, and the outcome is His to carry.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we cast every anxiety on You and choose trust over control. Make us, like Mary, willing servants who say yes to Your purpose. Fill us with power, love, and self-discipline as we step forward in obedience, believing that nothing is impossible with You.
