A Faith That’s Been Tested Is a Faith That Can Be Trusted

Scripture References

  • Daniel 3
  • Daniel 3:16-17
  • 1 Peter 1:7

Overview

Life is full of “fiery trials.” Craig Groeschel walks through Daniel 3 to show that tested faith becomes trustworthy faith. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image; when they are thrown into a blazing furnace, a fourth figure—most likely Jesus—meets them there. God doesn’t always deliver us from the fire, but He is always with us in it. Our response: “God, I believe You can. I believe You will. But even if You don’t, I still believe.”

Main Points

Fiery trials are normal, not rare

  • Everyone is either going into, in the middle of, or coming out of a hard season.
  • Peter calls these seasons “fiery trials” that reveal genuine faith (1 Peter 1:7).
  • Modern examples: unanswered prayers for healing, miscarriage, recurring cancer, financial strain, low-grade discouragement.

The pressure to bow

  • Nebuchadnezzar builds a 90-foot gold statue of himself and commands all officials to bow when the music starts—or be thrown into a furnace.
  • Entire crowd complies except three young exiles: Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego.
  • Possible rationalizations they could have used: fake bowing with crossed fingers, worship once then repent, preserve life to “minister later.”
  • Illustration: Today’s idols are subtler—scrolling social media, sports obsessions, possessions, people-pleasing.

A decisive stand

  • Respectful yet firm reply:

“The God we serve is able to deliver us… and He will… But even if He doesn’t, we will never serve your gods.”

  • Key convictions: God is able; God is sovereign; obedience is not negotiable.

God is able—and sometimes He doesn’t

  • Groeschel models honest prayer: acknowledge Scripture promises, keep asking, yet surrender outcome.
  • Real faith remains after disappointment; walking away when God says “no” shows faith was in results, not in God Himself.

Jesus meets us in the fire

  • Furnace heated seven times hotter; guards die throwing the boys in.
  • Nebuchadnezzar sees four men walking unhurt: a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ (Christophany).
  • God did not deliver them from the fire; He delivered them in the fire.
  • Many believers experience deepest intimacy with God during suffering.

The aftermath: influence through steadfast faith

  • Boys emerge without burns or even the smell of smoke.
  • Nebuchadnezzar praises their God and promotes them.
  • Tested faith becomes a testimony that draws others to worship.

Key Truths

  • Trials are unavoidable but purposeful—they prove the genuineness of our faith.
  • God is always able to intervene; His ability is never in question.
  • True faith says, “Even if God doesn’t do what I ask, I still trust Him.”
  • Jesus does not abandon His people; He joins them in the midst of suffering.
  • Steadfast obedience under fire influences skeptics and elevates God’s glory.

Response

  • Refuse to compromise biblical convictions, even when it costs.
  • Confront personal idols and choose wholehearted worship of God alone.
  • Declare daily: “My God is able; I believe He will; even if He doesn’t, I still believe.”
  • Seek Jesus’ presence in current hardships rather than only seeking escape.
  • Share stories of God’s faithfulness to encourage others in their own trials.

Closing

Groeschel ends by praying for those in fiery seasons and challenging listeners to persistent, surrendered faith. The sermon culminates in a salvation invitation, underscoring that Jesus is ready to forgive, fill with His Spirit, and stand with anyone who calls on His name.

“God, I believe You can. God, I believe You will. But even if You don’t, I still believe.”

Prayer

The pastor prays for peace, provision, healing, restored relationships, and unwavering trust, then leads new believers in a surrender prayer: acknowledging sin, trusting Jesus’ death and resurrection, asking for the Holy Spirit’s filling, and committing to follow Christ for life.
