Truth Has a Name

We live in a world that talks constantly about freedom, yet many hearts still feel bound. We may have choices, opinions, and outward liberties, but inwardly there can still be fear, guilt, confusion, and the exhausting pull of sin. That is why Jesus’ words in John 8 land with such force. He is not speaking about shallow freedom or mere self-expression. He is speaking about the deepest kind of liberty, the kind the soul cannot manufacture for itself.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus tells those who had believed Him that real disciples continue in His word, and in that path they come to know the truth. This is crucial. Truth is not presented as a vague principle floating in the air. In John’s Gospel, truth is bound up in the person of Christ Himself. To know the truth is to know Him as He truly is, the One sent from the Father, full of grace and truth. Freedom does not come from ancestry, effort, or religious familiarity. It comes from Christ, and from remaining under His living word.

That means truth is not whatever feels liberating in the moment. Christ as truth exposes what enslaves us and then delivers us from it. He tells the truth about our sin, our self-deception, and the lies of the enemy, but He does so in order to save, not crush. The deepest freedom is not the right to do whatever we want. It is release from the tyranny of sin so that we may belong to God with joy. Jesus does not merely give true information. He gives Himself. And where Christ is received by faith, chains begin to break.

So today, do not treat His word as background noise. Abide in it. Stay with it long enough for it to stay in you. Read a portion of John 8 slowly, ask what it reveals about Jesus, and where your heart resists His truth, surrender there. Let His word search you, steady you, and lead you. If truth has a name, then abiding is personal. Will you remain in Christ’s word today until His truth names and frees what has held you?

Heavenly Father, You are the God of truth, light, and perfect freedom. I praise You that truth is not uncertain or distant, but fully revealed in Your Son, Jesus Christ.

I confess that I often look for freedom in my own wisdom, my feelings, or my own strength. I admit that I resist Your word when it exposes what is really ruling my heart.

Thank You for sending Jesus, who tells the truth and gives freedom through His grace. Thank You that in Him I am not left to my sin, my blindness, or my bondage.

Holy Spirit, help me abide in Christ’s word today. Give me a willing heart, clear eyes to see Jesus, and courage to obey what He shows me. Let Your truth shape my thoughts, my choices, and my witness. Amen.
