Scripture

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Matthew 5:17

Devotional

It was a gift that your husband spoke last week, and a gift that you could step away, worship with your grandson, and watch his joy as he saw Papa on the screen. In that tender providence, God was already reminding you that He knows when to send help, when to give rest, and when to speak through another voice. Now, as this third message in learning from the Master begins, Jesus leads us past the comfort of checklists and into the deeper place of the heart.

In , Jesus says He did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them. That means the law still matters, not as a ladder by which we climb to God, but as a witness to who God is. The law reveals His holiness, exposes our sin, and points beyond itself to the One who alone obeyed perfectly. Jesus fulfills the law by embodying its righteousness, bearing its curse, and accomplishing what our effort never could.

This is why the Sermon on the Mount feels impossible when we read it honestly. It is meant to bring us to the end of ourselves. We may say we have not murdered, yet Jesus asks about anger. We may say we have kept the rules, yet He asks what is living in the heart. Christ fulfills the law not merely to forgive our failure, but to give us a new heart and His Spirit. The call is deeper and higher because grace does more than cover the outside. It begins transforming us from the inside out.

So today, do not merely admire God’s standards from a distance. Behold His holiness. Let His purity, truth, and love search you without fear, because the same holy God has come near in Christ. Take a quiet moment and ask, Lord, where have I confused outward obedience with inward surrender? Then thank Jesus that what He commands, He also fulfills and supplies. As you look at God’s holiness today, will you let it humble you and draw you closer to Christ?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are holy, righteous, and perfect in all Your ways. I praise You because Your law reflects Your beauty and Your Son fulfills all that I could never fulfill.

I confess that I often settle for outward obedience and measure myself by a checklist. I hide from the deeper truth of my heart and resist Your searching light.

Thank You for sending Jesus, who did not abolish the law but fulfilled it for me. Thank You that in Him I am forgiven, welcomed, and being made new by grace.

Holy Spirit, help me behold God’s holiness today without running away. Search my heart, deepen my surrender, and shape me from the inside out to love as Jesus loves. Amen.
