Go Deeper and Higher

Big Idea: Jesus calls His disciples beyond external rule-keeping into a transformed heart that loves as He loves and surpasses mere outward righteousness.

Overview

Many believers treat the Ten Commandments as a checklist and feel “pretty good” if they have not stolen, lied, or murdered. In the Sermon on the Mount, however, Jesus presses past behavior and asks uncomfortable questions about the heart. He did not come to cancel the Law but to fulfill it, revealing God’s holiness and our need for a new heart. Only the Spirit can give that inner change—what the preacher called “dispositional righteousness.” Using the command “You shall not murder” as an example, Jesus shows that harboring anger and refusing reconciliation violate God’s intent. True worship, therefore, includes promptly mending broken relationships and letting Christ’s love spill over in everyday life.

Key Scripture

  • — The foundation of the whole message: Jesus fulfills the Law and probes our hearts beyond “do not murder.”
  • — The prophetic promise: God gives a new heart and Spirit so we can keep His ways.
  • — The backdrop: the Law reveals God’s holiness and our sinfulness.

Main Points

1. Jesus Fulfills, Not Abolishes, the Law ().
• Christians sometimes dismiss the Old Testament, yet Jesus says He “did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”
• Four purposes of the Law:
1. Reveals God’s holiness.
2. Exposes our sin (a mirror that cannot cleanse us).
3. Sets God’s people apart so the Messiah could come.
4. Points forward to Jesus Himself.

2. Righteousness Must Exceed That of the Scribes and Pharisees ().
• Outward compliance is insufficient; God wants inside-out change.
• Two kinds of righteousness:
– Positional (justification): by grace we are declared righteous in Christ.
– Dispositional (sanctification): the Spirit steadily reshapes our character.
• promises God will remove the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh—He does the work.

3. The Deeper Meaning of “You Shall Not Murder” ().
• Hatred, simmering anger, cutting words, and refusal to forgive are heart-level murder.
• Illustration: a beautiful cup filled with stale, dirty coffee—appearance cannot hide contamination.
• Whatever fills the heart spills out when life bumps us (traffic, harsh words, family tension).
• Before bringing a gift to the altar, Jesus says to reconcile with the offended brother or sister; worship and relationships are inseparable.
• Prompt action—“reach out quickly”—prevents bitterness and opens doors to minister Christ’s love.

Application

The call: Do not settle for surface obedience; invite Jesus to transform your heart, then seek reconciliation where anger or distance remains.

Head — Understand that the Law’s true purpose is to reveal God’s holiness, our sin, and our need for Christ’s fulfilling work.

Heart — Confess any hidden anger or unforgiveness, admitting “my heart is broken,” and receive the new heart the Spirit supplies.

Hands

  1. Identify one person you may have wounded or who has hurt you; initiate reconciliation this week.
  2. When anger rises, pause and pray rather than react; let worship refill your heart.
  3. Regularly examine what is “in your cup” by asking, “What spills out when I’m bumped?” Replace it with Christ’s love through Scripture and prayer.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what ways have you treated faith as a checklist rather than a heart relationship?
  2. How does knowing Jesus fulfilled the Law change your view of the Old Testament?
  3. Where do you see “heart-level murder” (anger, contempt, harsh words) surfacing in your life?
  4. What step of reconciliation is the Holy Spirit prompting you to take today?

Prayer

Holy God, Your Law shows us Your purity and reveals our need. Thank You that Jesus fulfilled every requirement and offers us a new heart. Forgive our hidden anger and the words that wound. Fill us with Your Spirit so love, not bitterness, overflows. Lead us to swift reconciliation and deeper obedience that starts from within. In Jesus’ name, amen.
