The Works and Words of Jesus Prove He Is God
Big Idea: Jesus has already made His identity unmistakably clear—both His words and His works testify that He is God, calling every listener to respond in faith and belong to His flock.
Overview
Standing in the temple during Hanukkah, Jesus was pressed to say “plainly” whether He was the Messiah. He replied that He had already spoken and acted plainly, but His critics could not hear because they would not believe. Using the shepherd-and-sheep image, Jesus explained that genuine believers recognize His voice. The pastor answered the modern version of the same question—“Why doesn’t Jesus just say He is God?”—by showing how Jesus’ own statements and miracles unequivocally reveal His deity. From the oneness claim of , to the “I AM” of , to the intimate union language of , and the countless supernatural works that fulfilled Scripture, Jesus left no room for doubt. Ultimately, accepting His identity begins with an open heart of faith; rejecting it leaves a person outside the flock. The message closed with a clear invitation to believe, belong, and receive eternal life.
Key Scripture
- : 22-33 — The foundation of the whole message: Jesus’ sheep know His voice; He and the Father are one.
- : 54-59 — The turning point: before Abraham existed, Jesus declared, “I AM,” claiming God’s divine name.
- : 1-11 — The clarifying conversation: “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father”—words that reveal perfect unity.
Main Points
1. Hearing depends on belonging, and belonging begins with believing.
- The crowd asked, “If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus replied that unbelief, not ambiguity, blocked their hearing.
- Illustration: Two Bedouin shepherds in Bethlehem—each flock instantly followed only its own shepherd’s whistle, mirroring Jesus’ teaching that real sheep recognize their shepherd.
- : 6: without faith it is impossible to please God; openness is the doorway to understanding.
2. Jesus’ words plainly declare His deity.
- : 30: “I and My Father are one” (Greek, hen—one in essence and nature). The audience understood and picked up stones for blasphemy.
• Connection to the Jewish Shema ( : 4) and : 9—verses affirming God’s singular oneness. - : 58: “Before Abraham was, I AM” echoes : 14, God’s self-revealed name to Moses.
- : 9: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” Jesus equates knowing Him with knowing God.
- Cultural-language insight: modern readers may miss the force, but Jesus’ contemporaries did not—they attempted to stone Him precisely because they grasped the claim.
3. Jesus’ works corroborate His claim to be God.
- Miracles were not crowd pleasers but divine credentials: blind see, lame walk, storms obey, demons flee, dead rise.
- Conversation with John the Baptist ( : 4-5): Jesus pointed to His works as evidence for a doubting prophet.
- Prophetic fulfillments: walking on water, calming the sea ( : 29), quoting on the cross—all acts signaling divine identity.
- Summation: “Believe Me for the sake of the works themselves” ( : 11).
4. One God in three Persons: why “Son of God” does not lessen deity.
- Like white light refracted into red, green, and blue, the one God reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—distinct roles, one essence.
- The Incarnation: divinity wrapped in humanity so that the Son could die and rise for human sin, opening heaven to all who believe.
Application
The call: Open your heart in faith, believe that Jesus is exactly who He says He is, and step into His flock for eternal life.
Head — Examine Jesus’ claims and miracles in the Gospels; understand that He repeatedly, consciously claimed equality with God.
Heart — Trade skepticism for an open, believing heart; ask God to help you recognize the Shepherd’s voice.
Hands
- Read the Gospel of John this week, noting every “I AM” statement and miracle.
- Pray the shepherd’s prayer: “Lord, help me hear and follow Your voice today.”
- Share one truth about Jesus’ deity with a friend who is curious or skeptical.
Reflection Questions
- What keeps some people from “hearing” Jesus even after reading His words and seeing His works?
- How does understanding the cultural and linguistic context of the Bible deepen your confidence in Jesus’ claims?
- Which of Jesus’ miracles most convinces you personally of His divine identity, and why?
- In what area of your life do you need to trust the Shepherd’s voice instead of your own reasoning?
- How can you lovingly challenge a friend’s misconceptions about Jesus this week?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the great I AM, one with the Father, the Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep. Open our ears to hear Your voice, open our eyes to see Your works, and open our hearts to believe and belong. Strengthen our faith, deepen our love, and empower our witness so that many more will know that You alone are God and Savior. We praise You now and forever. Amen.
