New Wine, New Life

Big Idea: Jesus did not come to patch up something old; He came to give us an entirely new life that cannot be mixed with the old one.

Overview

Some disciples of John the Baptist and of the Pharisees questioned Jesus: “Why don’t Your disciples fast like we do?” (). Their real issue was tradition, not fasting. Jesus answered with two mini-parables—an unshrunk patch on an old garment and new wine in old wineskins—to show that His coming introduces something completely new. The old covenant pointed forward; the new covenant fulfills. Likewise, Jesus offers us a brand-new life, not a spiritual “add-on” to our old ways. Believers must therefore “put off” the old self and “put on” the new, living in the power of the Holy Spirit rather than blending worldly habits with kingdom life.

Key Scripture

  • — The foundation of the whole message: Jesus’ parables show the incompatibility of old religion with His new covenant.
  • — The theological anchor: in Christ we become new creations; the old has gone, the new has come.
  • — The practical blueprint: put off the old nature and put on the new life that reflects Christ.

Main Points

1. The Question Reveals the Trap of Tradition
• Rabbis commonly had disciples; what was unusual here was followers of pro-Jesus John teaming up with anti-Jesus Pharisees.
• Their query—“Why don’t Your disciples fast?”—really meant, “Why don’t You do things the way we’ve always done them?”
• Fasting itself is biblical (voluntary abstinence from food to draw near to God), but tradition had become the measuring stick of spirituality.

2. Jesus’ Two Illustrations: Patches and Wineskins
• Unshrunk cloth on an old garment pulls away and makes the tear worse—like the speaker’s 1970s jeans covered with iron-on patches that eventually curled and failed.
• New wine ferments and expands; old wineskins are brittle and burst.
• Lesson: Jesus didn’t come to improve an old system; He brought an entirely new covenant of grace.

3. From Old Covenant to New—and What That Means for Us
• Old covenant: man’s effort to reach God through animal sacrifice; performance-based.
• New covenant: God’s work to reach man through Christ’s sacrifice; grace-based.
• Illustration: mixing cold-brew coffee (old life) with orange juice (new life) produces something undrinkable—just as blending sin patterns with kingdom living ruins both.
• Scriptural call (; ):
– Put OFF fornication, anger, filthy language, lying, etc.
– Put ON kindness, humility, forgiveness, love, and the peace of Christ.
• The Christian life is not “dressing up” the old self but trading it for a Spirit-empowered new one.

Application

The call: Stop trying to blend the old life with the new. Surrender fully to Jesus and walk in the brand-new identity He gives.

Head — Recognize that traditions and former habits, however comfortable, cannot coexist with the new covenant life Jesus offers.

Heart — Desire true transformation, not cosmetic changes. Love the One who first loved you and gave Himself for you.

Hands

  1. Identify one “old garment” habit (anger, impurity, deception, etc.) and deliberately “put it off” this week.
  2. Replace it by “putting on” a Christlike virtue—practice kindness, forgiveness, or sacrificial love in its place.
  3. Consider a focused fast (from food or a time-stealing activity) to draw nearer to Jesus and strengthen your spirit.

Reflection Questions

  1. Which traditions or routines have you elevated above a living relationship with Jesus?
  2. Where are you tempted to “sew a patch” instead of allowing Christ to create something new?
  3. What specific old-self practice is God asking you to put off right now?
  4. How can you actively put on the new nature this week in home, work, or school?
  5. When was the last time you fasted to seek God? How might fasting help re-center your life on Him?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for not leaving us to patch up our broken lives but for making us new creations through Your cross and resurrection. By Your Holy Spirit, help us put off everything that belongs to the old self and put on the character of Christ. Give us strength to surrender habits, traditions, and sins that resist Your work, and fill us with Your joy, peace, and love as we walk in newness of life. In Your mighty name we pray. Amen.
