5 Things That Hinder Our Prayers | Daniel 10 | Gary Hamrick

Clearing the Roadblocks to Prayer
Big Idea: God gladly hears and answers, yet my prayers can be delayed or muffled by unseen warfare and by heart-issues He invites me to address.
Where This Meets Life
- Sitting in traffic, running through a long prayer list, yet feeling as though heaven is silent and nothing moves.
- Lying awake replaying a hurt someone caused, then trying to pray while resentment simmers.
- Scrolling past a need you could meet—a single parent’s grocery fundraiser, a neighbor’s rent crisis—because you’re focused on your own purchases.
- Whispering quick requests throughout a busy day but never slowing down to listen for God’s response.
- Feeling embarrassed that you haven’t bathed a situation in prayer the way Daniel prayed and fasted for 21 days.
Heart Check
- Which of the five hindrances (unseen warfare, unconfessed sin, unforgiveness, uncaring attitude, selfish motives) most often creeps into my prayer life?
- When was the last time I asked God to search me and show me sin I might be coddling rather than confessing?
- Who comes to mind when I hear Jesus say, “If you stand praying and have anything against anyone, forgive”?
- How willing am I to add “yet not my will but Yours be done” and truly mean it?
Practice This Week
Set a daily 15-minute Prayer Check-In (morning, lunch break, or evening).
- Begin with two minutes of quiet, asking the Spirit to reveal any sin, bitterness, uncaring attitude, or self-seeking motive; confess and release whatever He shows.
- Spend the next eight minutes presenting specific requests and then listening—no phone, no multitasking.
- Close by affirming, “Father, Your will be done,” and noting any prompt to act in compassion today.
Keep a brief note each day of what you confessed, prayed, heard, or felt led to do.
Busy-week option: Do the same rhythm once a day for 5 minutes (1 minute silence, 3 minutes request & listen, 1 minute surrender).
Stretch option: Fast from one pleasant food or media input for all seven days to sharpen your focus, as Daniel did.
Watch For
- Interpreting delayed answers as God’s indifference rather than possible spiritual resistance or God’s wiser timing.
- Sliding back into a “shopping-list” approach without the listening and surrender portions.
- Confessing sin but refusing to forgive someone, which immediately clogs the pipeline again.
Prayer
Father, thank You that through Jesus I have access to Your throne. Search me and show me anything that blocks the flow—sin I hide, grudges I nurse, needs I ignore, motives centered on me. I lay these at Your feet and receive Your forgiveness. Teach me to persevere even when answers seem delayed, and align my heart with Your good will. Strengthen me in the unseen battles and make my prayers effective for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
