The Cost and Call of Discipleship

Big Idea: Jesus does not invite admirers but followers—people who surrender self, take up the cross, and live wholly for Him.

Overview

Speaking from , the pastor traced five clear steps Jesus gives for anyone who would be His disciple. First comes desire: the inner craving that drives us to Christ. Desire must be followed by denial, disowning the self-life. That leads to death—taking up the cross in willingness to lose everything. Only then can we walk in daily devotion, traveling the same road with Jesus. Finally, there is destiny: those who “lose” their lives for Christ actually find them, while keepers become losers. Throughout, the pastor contrasted a fan with a follower, a tourist with a traveler, and challenged listeners to be “dissolved” into Christ so His life is seen through ours.

Key Scripture

  • — The foundation of the whole message: Jesus sets the five-step cost of true discipleship.
  • — Practical anchor: a disciple’s life is a “living sacrifice,” placed continually on God’s altar.
  • — Ownership reminder: because we were bought with Christ’s blood, our lives are no longer our own.

Main Points

1. The Step of Desire

  • “If anyone desires to come after Me…”—every forward movement begins with want.
  • God plants hunger, guilt, emptiness, or yearning so we’ll seek Him.
  • Without desire there is no decision; salvation from the human side starts here.

2. The Step of Denial

  • “Let him deny himself.” Not denying things but denying self.
  • Means disowning self-importance, self-indulgence, self-sufficiency.
  • Following Jesus is a declaration of dependence—handing Him the pink slip of the life we once drove.

3. The Step of Death

  • “Take up his cross.” First-century hearers thought of capital punishment, not minor inconvenience.
  • Christianity without a cross is a cheap substitute. Peter’s attempt to avoid the cross earned the rebuke “Get behind Me, Satan.”
  • Bearing the cross may require abandoning ambitions, possessions, or even life itself.

4. The Step of Devotion

  • “And follow Me.” Discipleship is apprenticeship: walking the same road, bringing Jesus into every sphere—vacations, screens, conversations.
  • Illustration: traveler vs. tourist. A traveler immerses and is changed; a tourist samples and moves on.

5. The Step of Destiny

  • “Whoever desires to save his life will lose it…whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
  • Finders are weepers; losers are keepers.
  • One day the Son of Man will come and “reward each according to his works.” Eternity vindicates the disciple’s loss-for-gain trade.

Supporting stories & images

  • London pastors amazed at the church’s global impact—echo of “from you the word sounded forth.”
  • Accents reveal identity; discipleship must be our first identity.
  • “Art of being a big shot” quote on pride as national religion of hell.
  • The Argentine steak that must be dissolved by gastric juices: refusing to be “digested” equals being vomited out like Laodicea’s lukewarm church.

Application

The call: Hand Jesus the steering wheel. Lose the right to self-rule so His life shines through yours.

Head — Understand that Jesus’ terms are non-negotiable: desire, denial, death, devotion, destiny.

Heart — Ask God to create holy desire and the courage to be “dissolved” into Christ, not merely to admire Him from a distance.

Hands

  1. Identify one area where self still rules (ambition, habit, relationship) and surrender it this week.
  2. Each morning, pray aloud, yielding your body as a living sacrifice.
  3. Invite Jesus consciously into every activity—work, leisure, screen time—and refuse any place you would exclude Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. What first stirred your desire for Jesus—guilt, emptiness, yearning, or something else?
  2. In what practical ways do you still cling to self-ownership?
  3. How would “taking up your cross” look in your current season—what might you have to abandon?
  4. Are you a traveler or a tourist in your walk with Christ? What evidence supports your answer?
  5. How does the promise of eternal reward influence your willingness to “lose” your life now?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You paid for us with Your own blood; we are not our own. Plant deep desire in our hearts, grant grace to deny self, courage to carry the cross, and steadfast devotion to follow wherever You lead. May our lives be wholly Yours, transformed so completely that the world sees only You. In Your powerful name we pray. Amen.
