Into the Deep: Teach Us to Pray

Big Idea: Prayer is the daily, lifelong conversation that forms us into Christ’s likeness—ask, seek, and keep knocking, and the Father will give Himself to you.

Overview

Relationships deepen through communication over time; the same is true with God. Prayer is not an efficiency tool for getting tasks done but the “oxygen” that transforms proud, self-reliant people into humble followers of Jesus. Launching the series “Into the Deep—Exploring the Heart of Prayer,” the pastor walked through , the one moment the disciples explicitly asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus gave a succinct pattern (often called the Lord’s Prayer), urged persistent knocking, and set a principle: our good Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who keep on asking. The goal of the series—and of this message—is simple: that every home, car, and ordinary moment becomes a house of prayer.

Key Scripture

  • — The foundation of the whole message: Jesus’ pattern, persistence story, and promise of “ask, seek, knock.”
  • — The corrective lens: pray in secret, avoid showy or wordy prayers.
  • — The encouragement: the Father delights to give His kingdom to His children.

Main Points

1. The Pattern of Prayer ()

  • Begins with God, then moves to our needs—upward, inward, outward.
  • Roughly 70 words yet covers past (forgive us), present (daily bread), and future (lead us not).
  • Pray privately; God already knows what you need, so many words aren’t required.
  • Practical tip: use biblical prayers (Lord’s Prayer, Paul’s in Ephesians, Psalms) or written prayers of other believers; pray silently when words fail.

2. Persistence in Prayer ()

  • Story: a midnight request for bread; the neighbor answers only because of relentless knocking.
  • Scripture calls for “continue steadfastly” (Col 4:2) and “pray without ceasing” (1 Th 5:17).
  • God sometimes “delays” to shape us; there is no divine delay—only His perfect timing and our impatience.
  • Keep interceding for long-term needs (a spouse’s salvation, healing, prodigal children).

3. The Principle of Prayer ()

  • Greek verbs = continuous: keep on asking, seeking, knocking.
  • Illustration of earthly fathers: none give a stone for bread or a scorpion for an egg.
  • How much more will the perfect Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask!
  • Prayer, like breathing, must be continual; it is the umbilical cord of spiritual life.

Application

The call: Begin today: pray more than you did last week, until every space you inhabit becomes a house of prayer.

Head — Understand prayer as an upward-inward-outward rhythm that shapes character more than it moves circumstances.

Heart — Grow in humble dependence; trust the Father’s timing even when answers seem slow.

Hands

  1. Designate a private “quiet place” (even the bathroom counts for parents) and meet God there daily.
  2. Slowly pray the Lord’s Prayer each morning, reflecting on each phrase.
  3. Choose one long-term request and commit to persistent daily intercession.
  4. Ask the Father specifically for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit every day this week.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you pray, do you start with God’s name, kingdom, and will—or with your own agenda?
  2. Which part of the Lord’s Prayer feels most challenging for you right now, and why?
  3. Where have you grown impatient with God’s timing? How might persistence reshape you?
  4. What practical step will you take to create a secret place for prayer this week?
  5. How would your home or workplace look different if it truly became a “house of prayer”?

Prayer

Father, we humble ourselves before You. Teach us to breathe the air of heaven through continual prayer. Align our hearts with Your name, Your kingdom, and Your will. Supply today’s bread, forgive our sins, and make us quick to forgive. Lead us away from temptation and deliver us from evil. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit so that our lives, homes, and church become true houses of prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
