Knowing the Truth That Sets You Free
Big Idea: Real freedom is only found in Jesus Christ, the unchanging source and standard of all truth.
Overview
Jesus’ exchange with the Jews in revolves around one word—“truth.” Seven times He uses it, culminating in the promise, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The pastor showed how truth has been under assault since Eden, when Satan introduced the first lie, and still stumbles “in the streets” today. Our culture questions whether truth even exists, redefining words and suppressing dissent. Scripture, however, teaches that God Himself is truth, His Word is settled forever, and only the Son can liberate us from the slavery of sin. The message explored where truth comes from, why terminology matters, five biblical traits of truth, and how accepting Jesus leads to genuine, lasting freedom.
Key Scripture
- — The foundation of the whole message: knowing and abiding in Jesus’ word brings freedom.
- — The theological anchor: Satan, “the father of lies,” first distorts God’s truth.
- — The cultural mirror: truth has “stumbled in the streets,” leaving society confused.
Main Points
1. Context: Jesus confronts false security in heritage ().
- The Jews appeal to Abrahamic lineage, yet plot to kill Jesus.
- Bloodline alone does not place anyone in God’s family; believing in Christ does.
- Jesus names their real father: the devil, “a murderer… and the father of lies.”
2. Truth has always been under attack.
- Eden: Satan twists God’s word, bringing sin and death.
- Isaiah’s day: “Truth is nowhere to be found” (Isa 59).
- Modern examples:
• Joseph Goebbels’ propaganda maxim—repeat a lie until people believe it.
• Classroom indoctrination: repeating narratives in “a million different ways.”
3. Two essentials for recognizing truth.
- Source / Standard
- God and His Word are the universal, unchanging yardstick (Deut 32:4; Mal 3:6).
- Without a fixed standard, no one can know what is truly right or wrong.
- Terminology
- Redefining words creates confusion (“sunny” now means “foggy”), illustrated by the viral Senate exchange on “who can become pregnant.”
- If people dislike the standard, they alter the vocabulary to fit their agenda.
4. Culture presses for conformity; Christ calls for transformation.
- Col 2:8 warns against being taken captive by hollow, deceptive philosophy.
- urges believers not to be conformed but transformed by God’s truth.
5. Five biblical characteristics of truth.
- Objective — Not “my truth” vs. “your truth”; it rests on facts outside ourselves.
- Universal — True for all people, places, and times (e.g., applies in every culture).
- Absolute — Not relative to situations; God’s Word stands forever (Ps 119:89).
- Eternal — Because God is eternal, His truth never expires (Ps 119:160; Isa 40:8).
- Freeing — The Son sets slaves of sin free indeed ().
6. The gospel invitation: freedom from slavery to sin.
- Everyone who practices sin is its slave.
- Jesus died and rose again to forgive, adopt, and liberate all who believe.
- A closing prayer led listeners to receive Christ and walk in His freedom.
Application
The call: Reject the shifting standards of culture; trust the unchanging Christ who alone can break the chains of sin and make you truly free.
Head — Recognize God and Scripture as the sole, objective standard of truth.
Heart — Love the Lord who embodies both grace and truth, and let His Word sanctify you.
Hands
- Measure every claim—news, classroom, social media—against the Bible.
- Refuse to adopt distorted terminology that denies God-given reality.
- Share the gospel winsomely with those trapped in confusion, offering Christ’s freedom.
Reflection Questions
- What voices most shape your understanding of truth right now—and why do you trust them?
- How have you seen terminology shift in ways that blur moral or spiritual clarity?
- Which of the five traits of truth challenges you most, and how will you respond?
- In what area of life do you feel “enslaved,” and how could abiding in Jesus’ word set you free?
- Who around you is confused about truth, and how can you lovingly point them to Christ this week?
Prayer
Lord of truth, we praise You that Your Word is settled forever and that You never change. Guard our minds from deception, cleanse our hearts from sin, and transform us by Your Spirit. Thank You, Jesus, for dying to set us free; help us walk in that freedom and hold out Your light to a world in darkness. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
