Wake Up — Don’t Live in the Window Seat

Scripture References

  • Acts 20
  • Luke 22:45-46
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6

Overview

The strange scene of Eutychus nodding off, falling three stories, and being raised back to life is a wake-up call. Pastor Robert Madu shows that spiritual drowsiness is seldom sudden—it creeps in while we’re distracted, under-prepared, and sitting in risky places. God still sends people, like Paul, who will come down to where we’ve fallen, remind us there’s still life, and call us to rise.

Main Points

A Peculiar Passage with Purpose

  • Luke includes only select moments from the church’s first 30 years; if this story made it in, it carries weight.
  • Eutychus isn’t remembered for words of wisdom but for dozing off during a marathon sermon—proof God hides deep lessons in odd scenes.

Capacity & Expectation in the Upper Room

  • Paul had more content than time; most listeners had capacity to receive it.
  • “Faith prepares for what it’s praying for.”
    • Illustration: The room was already filled with many lamps and enough oil—they prepared for the possibility of an all-night move of God.
  • We often beg God to pour out more while offering Him only a saucer-sized capacity.

From Engaged to Asleep—It’s Gradual

  • Natural and spiritual sleep follow the same slide: engaged → distracted → tired → asleep.
    • Story: Pastor’s wife unintentionally fell asleep on the front row, insisting afterward, “I didn’t know I was falling asleep,” mirroring Eutychus’s surprise.
  • You never know the exact moment you drift; you only know when someone wakes you.

Watch Where You Sit: The Window Seat Life

  • Eutychus chose a dangerous perch—open to the night and the room—trying to manage comfort, curiosity, and commitment at once.
  • Modern window seats: living on the moral edge, seeing how close we can get to sin without “falling.”
  • “Don’t fight sleep in a window seat.” Location matters as much as intention.

Signs You’re Getting Spiritually Sleepy

  • Diminished appetite for God’s Word.
  • Little or no desire to pray.
  • Things that once convicted you no longer bother you.
  • Resisting accountability.
  • Isolating from godly community.

Community Responsibility—Wake Each Other Up

  • No one in the room warned Eutychus or offered a safer spot.
  • We need believers who say, “You’re dozing—wake up,” before the fall happens.

Going Down Is Real Ministry

  • Others may look down; Paul went down, embraced the boy, and declared, “There’s still life in him.”
  • Ministry means entering the mud, not critiquing from balconies.

The Gospel Pattern

  • Jesus didn’t rescue us from a distance; He came down, took on flesh, died, and rose so we could live.
  • Paul’s descent foreshadows Christ’s greater descent and resurrection power available to anyone who has fallen.

Key Truths

  • God often buries profound lessons in peculiar places.
  • Your preparation reveals your expectation; faith gets the lamps ready.
  • Spiritual slumber is gradual and largely unnoticed until someone sounds the alarm.
  • Where you position yourself determines how vulnerable you are to falling.
  • Community’s job is not to judge from above but to go down, lift up, and speak life.

Response

  • Examine your current “seat”; move away from edges that tempt compromise.
  • Increase capacity: empty self-reliance, invite God to pour more.
  • Prepare in advance—schedule prayer, stay in Scripture, budget generosity.
  • Invite trusted believers to keep you accountable and wake you when you drift.
  • Go down for someone who has fallen; speak life and help them rise.

Closing

The Spirit is sounding a clear alarm: wake up. Whether distracted, tired, or already on the ground, it’s not over—there’s still life in you. Step away from the window, stand with the family of God, and live alert to all He wants to pour through you.

“Wake up.”

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us enough to stir us from spiritual sleep. Strengthen our weary flesh, renew our hunger for Your Word, and keep us alert to Your purposes. Help us leave the window seat, lean on community, and walk in the resurrection life Jesus secured for us. In His name, amen.
